  • Dear Esther trailer and information

"A deserted island...a lost man...memories of a fatal crash...a book written by a dying explorer."

Dear Esther is an award-winning, critically acclaimed, experimental first-person game created by Dan Pinchbeck and Robert Briscoe.

Built on the Source engine, it abandons traditional gameplay, leaving only a rich world soaked in atmosphere, and an abstract, poetic story to explore.

Originally launched in 2008 as a Half-Life 2 mod, Dear Esther is currently undergoing a huge rebuild by Robert Briscoe for a fully Independent release coming to Steam February 14th, featuring new audio, stunning visuals and an expanded storyline.

Dear Esther sells 50,000 copies in one week

    By Tom Curtis

Thechineseroom's atmospheric indie title Dear Esther has seen some impressive performance since its launch on February 14, and on Friday the studio's Dan Pinchbeck revealed that the game sold more than 50,000 units in its first week.

While these first week sales certainly spell good news for the indie title, Dear Esther's success first became evident last week, when it recouped its Indie Fund investment and made a profit within just 6 hours of its launch. When discussing the game's first-week sales, thechineseroom's Dan Pinchbeck said the game "has been successful far beyond our expectations."

Critical response has been equally positive, and the game has been nominated for three awards in the upcoming Independent Games Festival.

Shortly after Dear Esther's debut, thechineseroom revealed that it has partnered with Swedish studio Frictional Games to create a sequel to its popular indie horror title Amnesia: The Dark Descent.
