  • How to Read Wikipedia Through the Blackout

If you support the anti SOPA movement but still want to read Wikipedia today, then it isn't difficult - a single key press reveals all.

Wikipedia has used a JavaScript fragment to put up the blackout notice over the usual page. In other words, Wikipedia is working normally, it's just that you can't see it.

As the page is being masked by JavaScript, all you have to do is stop it from running. You could turn JavaScript off in your browser, but this would impact your viewing of other sites that run JavaScript as an essential part of their content.

A much better solution is to press the Esc key as the page loads - there is a brief pause between the page content appearing and the JavaScript covering it up, simply press Esc as soon as you see the page content.

If you miss it then press Refresh - F5 - and try pressing Esc again. The Esc key simply stops the page from continuing to load - it's the browser equivalent of Ctrl-C.

    Yes, it is that easy.

    Thanks for sharing!

I saw the message about them planning to do this. When I saw the blackout notice earlier this morning, I got the idea to edit the site preferences and disable JavaScript. It worked and I wasn't surprised that it did. For the Opera users, you can disable JavaScript specifically for Wikipedia without interfering with your browsing elsewhere. To do this, press F12 -> Edit Site Preferences -> Scripting -> untick Enable JavaScript.

Depending on how they did it, you can probably blacklist a single script URL as well to make the blocking method even less intrusive. Although, it's only one day, so it hardly seems worth the trouble.
