Mountain Dew has a flame retardant in it.

There’s BVO in there. What’s BVO, you say? It’s a flame retardant for plastics, aka brominated vegetable oil. It’s banned in Europe and Japan. But it’s there in your Mountain Dew. And your Squirt, Fanta Orange, Sunkist Pineapple, Gatorade Thirst Quencher (only orange flavor), Powerade Strawberry Lemonade and Fresca Original Citrus.

Is this a bad thing, necessarily? Depends on who’s talking.

The FDA has set safety limits on it, but the Environmental Health News, a group of online journalists, have issued a report saying this chemical has had a cloudy history.

    Gizmodo.com reports:

"According to the Environmental Health News, BVO contains “bromine atoms which weigh down the citrus flavoring so it mixes with sugar water” instead of floating to the top." Basically, BVO gives soda more consistent flavoring. That sounds good! But BVO is also added to polystyrene foam cushions in furniture and plastics in electronics because BVO can slow down the chemical reactions that cause a fire. Yuck. Is that what we want to be drinking?

Environmental Health News is reporting that there is renewed interest in reassessing BVO because of reports like this:

"After a few extreme soda binges – not too far from what many video gamers regularly consume – a few patients have needed medical attention for skin lesions, memory loss and nerve disorders, all symptoms of overexposure to bromine. Other studies suggest that BVO could be building up in human tissues. In mouse studies, big doses caused reproductive and behavioral problems."

Brominated flame retardants lately are under intense scrutiny because research has shown that they are building up in people’s bodies, including breast milk, around the world.

I don't drink soda much anyway but Mountain Dew was one of my favorites. Looks like I won't be drinking it ever again...

I drink a lot of soda, but I guess I won't be drinking those sodas that were mentioned above.
I only bother with things that interest me.

I like the Fresca Original Citrus but rarely drink it as its hard to find in 20oz around here. I don't like any of the Mt.Dew drinks and don't really see why they are so popular either but to each his own.

Yeah yeah yeah, and country crock butter is one molecule away from plastic. Blah blah blah. Every knows processed food isn't good for you, but if it were really hazardous it wouldn't be on the shelf. The Food and Drug Administration is doing it's job... or at least we hope.

People will put hazardous food on the shelf, if it will make them a buck, regardless of what the FDA does. Just look at this list of food recalls that we've had over the last year.

That's all rediculous. The United States is the only country you hear news stories like this, such as "Beware! of your children on escalators"., etc. Almost every news story and t.v. commercial in the U.S. is meant to scare and put fear into American citizens. Just watch that Michael Moore movie. I'm not a big fan of Michael Moore, but that one part of his movie I agreed on. The part which explains why the U.S. has so many more homicides than other countries. Because everyone is on edge and scared.

Notice how almost every commercial advertising a product uses some kind of fear to try to convince the consumer to buy their product... whether it's car commercials (safety against car accidents), food commercials (junk food is unhealthy, buy healthy food if you want to live longer), computer commercials (your children will not do good in school without them), antiperspirant deodarant/perfume commercials (girls/boys won't like you if you sweat & smell), etc.

And the news stories are even worse..." Beware of your children playing at the park!", "Beware of Halloween candy", "Beware of SODA!". You don't hear this many wacked out, negative, fearful news stories in other countries.

Practically every single t.v. commercial and news story uses/displays some sort/variety of fear. Next time you are watching television, see if you notice it.
