  • Forum outage and spam

Some time yesterday (sunday, 25th of september), some kiddies decided to deface the forums with some kind of ad. The kiddies also managed to spam everybody.

So really, you might want to change your password.

Sorry about the spam. The site should resume normal operations now.

I actually saw this while trying to view the forums yesterday: http://i.imgur.com/biEk9.png

Very immature. I'm glad the forums are back up though.

Edit: Removed picture and posted the link instead.

Was "you know who" responsible for this spam attack?

I doubt it. This was likely a side effect of this site being relatively easy to find on Google.

I'd really like to see statistics on whether spamming actually helps/benefits it's company, hurts it, or has no effect on sales.

Personally, I've never clicked on any advertisement in my life. Even if it's from an established and trusted company, ex: Verizon. If I see something interesting that I'd like to know more about, I still wouldn't click on the Verizon advertisement. I would just manually visit the Verizon website by entering in the Verizon's website in the address bar. There are too many scams/tricks that pose as a trusted site, like Verizon, and they try to make you think that they are linking you to that trusted site (Verizon), but when you click on the ad, it takes you to some other website or automatically downloads malware without you knowing.

Lots of small kids, old people and dumb idiots click on spam links all the time. If it wasn't profitable, they wouldn't do it.

The whole point of their advertising was to attract idiots like themselves. This wasn't done by a company. Legitimate operations tend to have no need to advertise by brute force annoyance. Spam gives often people a bad impression of who the spam points at.

Although this attack could have just as easily been perpetrated by a third party, and then blamed on the site in question. That's pretty common.

Very glad to see that at the very least, the skids weren't malicious.
