  • That Earthquake pisses me off

I was sitting in my chair in front of my computer when I felt the ground underneath me shake, twice. My dog started barking. A lot of the neighbors on my block went outside, wondering what was going on.

The epicenter is Mineral, VA, 230 miles from my house, and I still felt it.

What worries me is the fact that the LeVere estate is 101 miles from the epicenter of that quake. That land has been in my family since the 1850's, before the Civil War. My cousins and I are going to go down there to check our house out, to see if there is any damage.

I felt the earthquake where I live. The building sway like for 45 seconds. I knew immediately that it was an earthquake because when I was a kid I felt the earth shake once but being on a skyscraper is terrifying when earthquake hits.

I was down the shore and it was pretty cool seeing the sand jiggle and shake on the beach. Before the earthquake, everyone on the beach was strangers and weren't talking to one another. After the earthquake, everyone started talking to each other. There were a few people who got nervous and ran off the beach thinking that a tsunami might be coming.

The way you know you're about to get hit by a tsunami is if the water at the beach goes well away from the shore line. Then it all comes back & then some & then some more.

It doesn't matter where you live, there will be some type of natural disaster that your area is prone to getting. Me personally, I'd much rather take my chances with hurricanes. Most of the time you see them coming several days ahead of time. Generally, you have time to prepare for those. The tornaodes hurricanes spawn usually aren't intense. With tornadoes, you're lucky if you have 20 minutes warning. Plus, there's no such thing as a tornado season. Hurricane season runs from June to November. I'm not too crazy about quakes, blizzards, & floods.

            Darwin comes close, but misses.

Jackie Sparnackel has to abandon her van and her belongings near the Frisco Pier after she drove up to see how the storm-battered structure was doing. Friends tried to tow her out but she was caught in the overwash. Hurricane force winds from Irene were battering Hatteras Island where power has been knocked out. CHUCK LIDDY - [email protected]

I don't feel bad for her. She knew the consequences and she was that dumb to drive up to see how the 'storm-battered structure' was doing. That's what she gets for playing around like a little kid wanting to see the storm's destruction. She could have not went to see the structure or she could have parked in a safe place. That's just plain stupidity.

East Coast hurricanes are different from Gulf Coast hurricanes. When a hurricane enters the Gulf of Mexico, it tends to slow down & gain strength rapidly. Most hurricanes that I've seen that hit the East Coast generally don't strengthen that much, but they pick up forward speed & race up the coast.

To me, the worst part about hurricanes isn't the winds, the flooding, or the damage it causes, its the aftermath. Its gets real hot after a storm passes (because of the high pressure system that steers the storm). When you compound that with having no electricity (or no airconditioning), it really gets bad.

I got it with some of that hurricane and even had that earthquake shake the ground here but non of it affected me in anyway or form, the hurricane died out by the time it hit me and many people felt the earthquake but I didnt.
