  • Game Endings...What is so special about the 255th level?

What is so special about the 255th level in games that don't really have endings to them? The games that don't have endings and have "kill screens" instead, why are the kill screens often after completion of the 255th level. Games that do this are Pac-Man, Dig Dug, Mario Bros, and a bunch of other games. They all experience kills screens, reset, or crash after the 255th level. So why does this happen always after the 255th level?

255 = the maximum number that 1 byte can represent so these games probably use 1 bytes as a pointer to the level data and when it overflows unpredicatable things happen.

Exactly what I was thinking. Not enough forethought. Or, they intentionally left the limit at one byte, as a limiter.

most games will simply will loop after the 255th level
i know that donkey kong will which has a kill stage is because the "bonus" aka timer counter is what actually loops to zero on that level

I wonder if Galaxian has the 255-level limit...

Is it possible to make a patch that gives a game an ending that normally has no ending. For example, would it be possible for someone to make a patch for (NES) Pac-Man in which it makes the 100th level the last level and after beating the 100th level, a "Congratulations, You Are A True Champion...etc...Your High Score is ###...etc...Game Over" screen appears. I'm just using the Pac-Man video game, the 100th Level, and the 'ending text' as an example. I'm just curious if it's possible to create an "Ending Screen" for a game that has no ending due to continuous play, looping, kill screens, etc. It would be nice if a game like (NES) R.C. Pro-Am had an ending to it. I hate that some games don't have endings.

I remember a game on the Specturm, Fast Food (a Pac-Man esk game), which after reaching a certain level made you play them all again but this time they were upside down. I could never get to those levels but my mum could

Yeah you can give endings to endless games, but that requires hacking knowledge and graphic editing.
