  • The Today Show: It's "Weird" for Men Over 30 to Play Games

    By Chris Pereira, 07/11/2011

Playing games when you're over the age of 30 is "weird," The Today Show has declared. Friday's show hosted a segment called "The Other View: Getting a Guy's Perspective on Love" where women send in questions about men to be answered by advertising exec and television personality Donny Deutsch. The final question read, "What's up with men and videogames? Do you think it's OK for men to play videogames in their 30's and over?"

The woman reading the question could barely make it through without laughing at the notion, and it was immediately met with another of the show's hosts declaring, "That's weird." Deutsch said, "The answer's no. ...When you're in your 30's, there should be something more on your mind or attention than videogames." The consensus was that it's acceptable if games are being played with a child, but it was agreed that wasn't what was being asked.

You could say I have a slanted view on the subject as someone who both plays videogames and writes about them, but were this question asked about watching movies or reading books -- as if it ever would be -- you can bet it would be found perfectly acceptable. Playing videogames, however, continues to have a stigma in many people's minds despite the fact that Wii, DS, Facebook, and mobile games have all gotten more people playing games than ever before.

And, as GameSetWatch notes, a recent report (PDF) by the Entertainment Software Association shows the average age of someone playing games is 37 -- well into that "weird" 30+ category -- and 29% of gamers were over the age of 50. The question also seems to imply that only men play games, yet the ESA's report shows that 42% of game players are female.

    How weird.

I don't plan on quitting soon either, its a fun hobby we all enjoy and people who laugh or poke fun have never even gotten into some kind of game. If they did they would understand that its fun and entertaining, so whats next? its "Weird" to be over 40 and watching lame fake "Reality" Shows or all these sinning show? It all comes down to peoples opinions/stereotyping and who cares about that?

I've always viewed movies, music, & video games as reminders of my childhood & past. Playing games that I enjoyed as a kid reminds of what things were like back then. There's nothing wrong with having video games as a hobby.

I will be honest though. I'm wondering how my girlfriend is able to understand me playing video games often even though she doesn't get into the retro games. Although, she has her habits. She's into Facebook, Farmville, Farmtown, & Frontierville. Not to mention American Idol & So You Think You Can Dance. I've never been crazy about either one of those shows.

In alot of ways we are very different: She's quieter; I'm more outspoken. She's like Dance, Country, & Southern Gospel Music; I prefer Classic Rock, 80's Metal, & Contemporary Christian Music. She likes college football (Univ. of AL); I like wrestling & boxing. She likes watching current TV shows; I prefer the older ones. She's very skinny; I'm very fat.

Regardless of that, I'm always happy when I'm with her. I'm looking forward to us getting married next year. I know that she feels the same way.

I totally agree with you. I consider the hobby of playing video games the same thing as watching television or movies.

There's also many benefits of playing video games. It improves hand eye coordination, concentration, memory, and even driving a motor vehicle. Yes, that's right... playing "driving" video games can even improve a person's driving skills. There was a study done at the University of Syracuse on that if I recall correctly. Also, before receiving my Masters Degree in Psychology, I wrote a paper on video games which included some of these beneficial aspects of video games. The paper was about something in the nature of "Does violence in video games effect or lead to kids being violent", etc. So part of my paper included the benefits of playing video games. Too bad I can't find the paper, otherwise I'd attach it here. But I must have done a good job because I got an "A-"

I guess I only have 2 years left of video games. I don't believe in any of this studies that they are always doing on video games. The first time I saw a NES in my cousin's house in the early 90's I fell in love with video games ever since. I always find it relaxing when playing and not thinking about the problems of real life

I'd like to add that in my paper I was supporting the idea that violent video games do NOT lead/cause kids to be violent.

I agree with you there its a great way to escape real life and not to mention a great time killer, especially if you play online with others in the more recent gen systems.

If your girlfriend has never played video games before, and just doesn't get it, let her play Diddy Kong Racing. (N64)

Yeah...but I think most people who think men over 30 playing video games is weird are women who aren't interested in video games. To them, video games also threaten time they want to spend with the guy. They would also criticize sports, if sports weren't so prevalent already that every man would boo them off the stage, heh.

I love playing games, but I will admit that I hardly find time to anymore. And honestly, I find hacking games more fun than playing them...but the problem is, to really enjoy hacking a game, you should be familiar with what its normal game play is like. A conundrum.

The truth is my girlfriend has video games & systems of her own, but she spends more time doing other things. Obviously, I enjoy spending time with her more than I do with my video games. When we get married, she knows what kind of a man that she'll be marrying. Two things she knows that I like are video games & wrestling. I know what she likes & what hobbies she enjoys. As long as she doesn't stand in my way of those, I won't stand in the way of hers. In other words, she isn't trying to change me & I'm not trying to change her.
