A German computer scientist has published details of the secret code used to protect the conversations of more than 4bn mobile phone users.

It was only a matter of time before this happened. The cell industry might use this as an excuse to force everybody to replace their phones, assuming the cheap bastards don't just continue using the insufficient and broken infrastructure for another decade.

In the American society, all that needs to be done is to frame a problem in terms of how much money one has or requires, and they can remove the immediate need to solve a problem.

Leave torrents alone? Costs too much to maintain bandwidth.
Increase the bandwidth? Too expensive to implement.
Government Health care option? Breaks competition, won't be enough money left for commercial business.
Pay back housing loans? It's not because nobody saved money, it's because there's insufficient income to pay it off.
Loan provider going into bankruptcy? It's not because they let people take out loans with a monthly payment of every cent extra they get a month beyond other bills, it's because they don't have the money to cover the non-payers.
Can't afford to spend money on a business? It's not that the CEO, assistant CEO, managing director, director of operations, assistant director of operations, managers, sub-managers, assistant-managers, etc. are eating cash with bonuses, it's that there's not enough income from the products.
Products too expensive for consumers? It's not that everyone on the line from factory to customer wants every cent they can get, it's that lower profit margins make other products more enticing to get funded by venture capitalists.

All too many people waffle out of explaining the real problem by citing money, the same way a computer tech can waffle out of saying they screwed up by saying the computer 'crashed', 'halted', 'got infected', 'had a power surge', 'lost the UPS because of a bad battery', or 'got solar flare failures'.

It's too bad that the only time the 'not enough money' excuse doesn't work is when consumers are the ones who don't have enough.

Avoiding blame has become a very popular thing worldwide. At this point people will keep it up until heads start rolling. Similarly most of the world's behavior is continuing to get worse.

Unlike the beginning of this century... 2009 has been an "interesting" year, much as I was expecting. Of course the majority of events have been negative. I guess it's still downhill for 2010 as well.
