  • Starting July 10th - GSHI 10th Anniversary Contest!

DO NOT POST SUBMISSIONS HERE. ALL SUBMISSIONS MUST BE MADE BY PRIVATE MESSAGE TO LAZY BASTARD.

We're now closing in on the 10th anniversary of GSHI, and, on July 10th, we will begin the tournament

This year, there will be three events:

    1. Hacking Competition - Hackers will test their mettle in a hacking challenge utilizing an emulator. A link to the emulator and required ROM will be given at the last minute, along with the code(s) to be hacked. The winner will take home a $75 gift certificate to EB Games, a 4-pack of Gamer Grub, and a GSHI.org t-shirt.

    2. Gaming Tournament - Gamers will face off in a test of raw skill, using an emulator that records actions taken, and allows these actions to be "played back" on the emulator. The winner will take home a $75 gift certificate to EB Games, a 4-pack of Gamer Grub, and a GSHI.org t-shirt. The second place winner will take home a 4-pack of Gamer Grub, and a GSHI.org t-shirt.

    3. Artwork Contest - Competitors will create a unique piece of art in the form of a GSHI.org logo, which will be voted on by GSHI admin staff. The winner will take home a $75 gift certificate to EB Games, a 4-pack of Gamer Grub, a GSHI.org t-shirt, and his/her logo on next year's GSHI.org t-shirts.

Rules and specific details for each event will be posted on July 10th. There will be a fairly short window for participation (only a few days), so keep your eyes open. Entry into all events is free, and all that's required is that participants register on the GSHI.org forums, in order to private message me (Lazy Bastard) with submissions for whichever event(s) they choose to take part in.

So spread the word, and prepare thy selves!

For the hacking competition, it's not mandatory to use the provided emulator. You may use any emulator you like, as long as you use the provided ROMs.

The GSHI 10th Anniversary Contest has begun! The first two events will be revealed here and now, while the third and final event will be revealed on July 20th.

Before we begin, here are some ground rules:

            - All submissions will be sent by private message (on these forums) to me. Any submission sent to another member, made in a forum thread, or transmitted by any other means, will not only not be accepted, but will disqualify you from the contest. Submissions are sent to me for security reasons, and to prevent other competitors from copying your work. The only exception is by specific instruction by myself, either in the instructions file included in an event, or by PM.

            - Each event will have a limited time frame; if your submission is made after the event has been closed, it will not be accepted. Keep your eye on the clock.

            - Obviously, cheating or circumvention of the rules of any event is prohibited. If you somehow manage to step around the rules in a manner that technically adheres but is obviously not in sensible compliance with the rules, we will disqualify you. We're well aware that we're in a videogame hacking scene, and we expect participants to have a sense of fair play. If you're unsure of whether or not an action is against the rules, send me a PM, and ask.

            - If the winner of an event does not wish to divulge an address or method of receiving any or all prizes, the prize(s) will then go to the second place winner, and so on if necessary.

That said, let's get on with it!

The first event to open is the Gaming Tournament. This event will close on July 15th at 12AM (midnight) Central Standard Time. Instructions and all required software can be found here: http://GSHI.org/GT.zip

Unfortunately, the Gaming Tournament package for this year will only work in a Windows environment. If you're working in a Mac or Linux environment, please emulate or borrow Next year's package will hopefully be compatible with all popular operating systems. As noted in the instructions file included with the Gaming Tournament package, participants will send me a PM stating that they're ready to submit, to which I will respond with an email address which the participants can then send submissions to.

The second event to open is the Artwork Contest. This event will close on July 25th at 11:59PM Central Standard Time. As noted above, competitors will create a unique piece of art in the form of a GSHI.org logo, which will be voted on by GSHI admin staff. Rules:

            - The winning logo will be on next year's GSHI.org t-shirts, so logos must be large enough and have a high enough resolution to support this. 640 x 480 is a decent baseline to begin with, but higher resolutions are, of course, acceptable.

            - If a logo contains copyright characters or symbols (videogame characters, etc), there must be a fine-print disclaimer concerning this. For example, if there's a picture of Mario holding up "GSHI.org", there must be something along the lines of "The Mario character is copyright Nintendo" at the bottom in small print.

            - The artwork must be the original work of the person submitting it.

            - Obviously, no offensive material may be on the logo. Swearing, nudity, racism, etc are all not allowed. Use common sense.

            - The logo must feature "GSHI.org".

Have fun, and let the games begin!

              Happy Anniversary guys!

To think 10 years ago we were all clamoring for the scraps from Datel's table to hack N64/PS1, and now we're working on a completely homebrew cheat hacking system for PS2--much like Parasyte with GCNrd a while back. I'm using the communications source put together by Jimmi and others to get a Renegade-like interface going for the PC side of things. Lazy Bastard was actually able to test searching last night.

Obviously, I haven't been with GSHI for 10 years, but I started at GSCentral 10 years ago in May. I was probably lurking around the scene for a little while before that too. Between GSC and KW, I had come to know most of the key players from GSHI before I joined here. They've always been a cool bunch, with plenty of talent.. I still don't know how Ugetab's mind works sometimes, but he's pulled more than a few "impossible" codes out of his ass. Others have their specialties too. Being a little nostalgic, I decided to skim the member list for a minute.

                Nice.

Yeah, it's awesome that we've been going for 10 years, and perhaps even more awesome that we're making such progress on Artemis Huge credit goes to Jimmi, Viper187, misfire, and all the other contributors to the project.

Heh, I was just being nostalgic as well, and reading through some posts from years back. It's interesting that the GSHI 10th year anniversary is on CzarDragon's birthday (or close to it...honestly, we're not sure which day in mid-July that GSHI was first started).

It's also great that so many great hackers have made GSHI their hacking scene home. The place is constantly improving.

I hope you bastards are silently working on the competition!

                  IMPORTANT:

Hybrid has identified a problem with Puzzle (one of the ROMs included in the package), and has provided a fix for it. Grab it here, or you probably won't be able to play the game using the included emulator (which you must use): http://gshi.org/Puzzle.nes

I've also updated the original package, so those who haven't downloaded it yet can ignore this message.

The results of the Gaming Tournament are in.

The 1st place winner, by achieving the highest score in two of the three games, is none other than CzarDragon! His (titanic) scores were:
                            ____________________________________________
Tetramino: Lines multiplied by Score; highest at death wins.
                            52836x308= 16,273,488 (highest)

Puzzle: Fastest time to finish first two puzzles wins.
                            0:38+0:49= 1:27 (highest...well, lowest, heh)

MunchieAttack: Highest score at death wins.
                            80,000
                            _______________________________________________

For winning 1st place in the Gaming Tournament, he will collect a $75 gift certificate to EB Games, a 4-pack of Gamer Grub, and a GSHI.org t-shirt (and massive bragging rights).

The 2nd place winner, by achieving the highest score in the remaining game, is Ace! His scores were:
                            _________________________________________________
Tetramino: Lines multiplied by Score; highest at death wins.
                            17327 X 107 = 1,853,989

Puzzle: Fastest time to finish first two puzzles wins.
                            30:00+

MunchieAttack: Highest score at death wins.
                            107,000 (highest)
                            _________________________________________________

For winning 2nd place in the Gaming Tournament, he will collect a 4-pack of Gamer Grub, and a GSHI.org t-shirt. (and moderate bragging rights, heh).

A notable mention should be made of Pugsy's scores, which would have won second place if this had been a totaled raw score comparison:

                            _________________________________________________
Tetramino: Lines multiplied by Score; highest at death wins.
                            53173 X 218 = 11,591,714 (second highest)

Puzzle: Fastest time to finish first two puzzles wins.
                            1:20 + 1:38 = 2:58

MunchieAttack: Highest score at death wins.
                            68,400
                            _____________________________________________

The Artwork Contest is still running, and will close on July 25th at 11:59PM Central Time. The Hacking Competition will open on July 20th. So, get your rest, and be ready
