  • Help us write some VG hacking history!

Some time ago, it occurred to me that we need a proper record of the histories of various things in the hacking scene. Apparently, it had also occurred to LiquidManZero (it quite possibly has occurred to quite a few people), and we ended up talking about it the other day. I'd never gotten around to actually starting this, as I had plenty of other projects to work on, and that would seem to be why LMZ never did either. However, when we were talking, and mentioning that we should get around to it at some point, I just so happened to be playing around in the GSHI Wiki, and realized that the Wiki would be a great place for these histories to grow. After all, who better to write a history of a community than the community itself?

In that spirit, I have begun the following, and encourage everyone to pitch in whatever knowledge, records and memories they have:

History of the Video Game Hacking Scene: http://gshi.org/wiki/History_of_the_..._Hacking_Scene

    History of GSHI: http://gshi.org/wiki/History_of_GSHI

    History of Project Artemis: http://gshi.org/wiki/History_of_Project_Artemis

Nice. I will read through these today.

There's also the "Universal Debugger Project's" Project History section, which contains some relevant information.

Ah, cool. I have a bunch of stuff I wrote down for Artemis some time ago that I need to add. Also, perhaps some of the people that originated in the GSC side of the old scene could write a history of that...

        Newbies.....

1998- Golden Age??? Strewth you really are all a bunch of newbies I feel so OLD!!!

I'd been creating cheat codes for 12 years by 1997, the so called 'Pre-Golden-Age' (1997 and earlier). Strewth I had even started making emulator cheats before 1997 and released my first MAME cheat.dat in April 98.

Heh, nice. The 'Golden Age' is not referred to as such because of its age (as others have used that term before), but because of the immense amount of activity and interest in hacking occurring during that period (ie, it was golden).

These articles were a great read (including Parasyte's). I remember many of these events. Some history of the 'Pre-Golden Age' would be nice to read. An article for The GFCC, CMP, and other hacking groups would be a good addition, as well. Without PS2DIS, the PS2-based ones probably wouldn't exist today.

Yeah, it would be nice to have some more contributors. I definitely don't have a good idea of everything that went on over at GSC, before it went downhill.

I can send a message to Fiber Optikz and see if he has the time to share anything in regards to the GFCC's history. We have not spoken to each other since '05 or '06, if I recall correctly. He's usually away whenever I decide to go on AIM (something I don't do much, if at all these days).

Cool; that would be most interesting.

Those wiki articles were very interesting.

Almost all of the reading was about after the year 1997. I would like to read about the "Pre-Golden-Age" (1997 and earlier).

Posted by Pugsy: I'd been creating cheat codes for 12 years by 1997, the so called 'Pre-Golden-Age' (1997 and earlier).
Maybe Pugsy (or whoever else) can write something short about the late 1980's - 1996. I'm interested in that time period.
