Please Help!!!!

Im trying use cheats from a AR MAx cheat device on a Slim PS2 SCPH-70012 model and its a NTSC edition PS2 for my backup games and I can not get them to work after I pick my cheats the ensure game disc screen comes up I press X button but that screen just pops up again and will not start the game up. I have a Modbo 760 chip. If I posted this in the wrong section excuse me Im new to all this modding and backup stuff and Im wondering if someone would help me step by step on getting it to work and guide me in the right way. All I know is AR MAX works fine on a unmodded ps2 with normal games. Backup games and modchips always seem to cause problems with cheat devices. I can't remember the site, but have you checked that psxscene site or whatever it was called?
