  • Just got a new computer

i just paid for a new/used desktop like computer.

The specs that i know of are as follows.
    2X 2.8Mhz Intel XEON processors
    2GB DDR Ram
    Integrated graphics (with dedicated Vram)
80GB hard drive (SATA or SCSI i dont know yet)
    1 DVD/CDRW drive
1 DVD ROM (going to be gone and replaced with a Lightscribe DL DVDRW drive)
    Floppy
    2 keys :O
    a non redundant PSU
Dedicated Audio card with Joystick port
    its a heavy mofo
    2 fount USB ports

judging by its looks i would presume it is a Dell PowerEdge 1800. This means it has 6 internal slots for hard drive (6TB >8D hehehe) up to 12GB DDR ram 2X PCIe slots, 2X PCI-X slots 2X PCI slots (YEY cheap dedicated graphics comming to a Poweredge soon ) 1 single SCSI embedded controler and 2 SATA (150 or 300 :/) Built in Intel 10/100/1000 Gigabit (whew no need for a card).

here is a link to what i think is the Spec sheet for the computer. note they didnt think drives would get over the 300GB mark so the Maximum storage is obsolete.

The pict there looks like what i bought i will take a much closer look tonight >

It comes with a 17" LCD Gateway screen (what will i do with my 19" Widescreen >_>), a Wireless Microsoft Keyboard and Explorer 4 like mouse (has a tilting scroll) supposably a webcam (toss that shit unless some one here wants it) a 2.1 set of speakers (toss that shit seeing as i have 2 Bose personal 2.0 speakers) a printer (already have a HP All in one with Duplexing).

I am excited at this new prospect. hopefully with this new powerful computer i will get off my as and upgrade to a faster Internet service :3.

Oh shit i forgot to look for Firewire ports (IEEE1394). oh well... updates tonight

Uggh. it has XP/Vista home (probibly a pirated edition) and i cant figure out how to boot to the CD drive even after entering the BIOS. it has given me headaces. also the master CD drive is dead and the floppy seems to get no power. i cannot install SUSE 11 32 bit edition (i was told not to trust the 64 bit).

When it turns on it sounds like a jet engine. VWHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM ...........
lets just say it is one noisy mother fucker too.

Other issue was i was unable to do any of the POST options on the Wireless keyboard it came with. i had to switch to a wired PS/2 keyboard.to be able to enter the BIOS and shit. found that whoever owned it last deleted the DELL partitons on the drive (maybe removed the SCSI drive and put in a 80GB SATA?) so i was unable to use the other boot options avalible to me.

This computer at the moment is castrated, crippled and has its input devices slashed to bits. Oh and thew integrated network isnt working either because XP/VISTA HOME doesnt have the drivers.

Sounds like you have your work cut out for ya,1 think I learned over the years working on Dell's is that their shit and to make the system boot off of the cd you have to disable it in the bios and leave the one you want to boot off of enabled.Dell doesnt make their shit look at both drives just the first one in bios or the only 1 enabled in bios.

I just got a new optical drive to replace the busted Master Optical drive. i really wanted to have 2 DVD burners but i settled for a cost effective DVD-ROM/CDRW lite-on for 22 bucks (i wanted it NOW not in a few flipping days).

I am still unable to get the Intel Integrated Gigabit network working. e10000 i think is the type. I go and have XP home (it is now confirmed its Core windows system is XP home) search for the drivers i check "select drivers from location" i am unable to get it to go to the directory that i installed the drivers to which is C:\Intel\Netware\Drivers. it has frustrated me to no end. this on top of the SCSI drivers not working and not able to find out how to boot to CD has left me taking aspirin every 4 hours. After i got the new optical drive installed i put the SUSE 11 disc in and it autoplayed the installer.

I now can dual boot to SUSE but i still don't have any Internet :^( . I also seemed to crash it using Kwin. heh, 4 processors used up completely by Kwin. that is hilarious but i need to fix that tonight. Maybe i should have installed KDE 3.9.5 instead of KDE 4.

That solved the CPU usage issue. I reinstalled SUSE 11 with the older KDE and now i have a much more stable system. Got PCSX installed and ZSNES and FAKEnes. i will aim to see if i can get PCSX2 installed as soon as i find a RPM of it or learn how to compile. I am using the 32Bit version of SUSE on the 64 bit system which means i will have a wider range of programs avalible to me.
