Ventura College was locked down briefly this morning after a teenage boy apparently showed off a firearm and a cache of bullets in the college cafeteria.

The 16-year-old suspect was apprehended by police around 10:30 a.m., about an hour after he left the 13,500-student campus, said Ventura Police Sgt. Jack Richards. A handgun was found, officials said.

Authorities did not release the suspect's name because of his age. He is a student in the local public school district, Richards said.

College officials closed the campus as a precautionary measure, said college spokeswoman Alison Moore. A continuation school on the campus also was locked down, as well as a nearby high school and middle school in the Ventura Unified School District, Richards said.

At least two Ventura College students reported seeing the young man with the firearm and a magazine in the cafeteria, Moore said. He did not make any threatening statements, she said: "He was just showing it off is my understanding."

A student witness said the suspect took off on a bicycle.

Students and employees at the college were notified of the situation and were asked to remain in their classrooms until 1 p.m., Moore said. After the suspect was in custody, the lockdown was lifted, she said.

The community college campus in the city's suburban east end has had few brushes with violence. The last was a gang-related stabbing in the campus library in 2005, Moore said.

But a spate of gun violence on school campuses in recent years has prompted authorities to move quickly to lockdown whenever a threat emerges, Richards said.

"It's a lot of precautionary stuff," he said.

Teen, gun found after lockdown; college classes resume at 1 p.m.

Ventura College, Foothill Technology High School, El Camino High School and Anacapa Middle School in Ventura were all locked down this morning after a teenager brought a loaded gun to the college campus, police said.
The 17-year-old from Ventura was apprehended — without the gun — at Seaward Avenue and Highway 101 at about 10:45 a.m. The teen told police he had stashed the gun under a video game in the college cafeteria, and officers later found the .45-caliber, loaded, semiautomatic pistol there, authorities said.
Police said they were not sure why the teen, a student at Ventura College, brought the gun to school or hid it in the cafeteria. No one was injured, police said.
Classes at Ventura College were set to resume at 1 p.m. today, campus officials said. Lockdowns at the other schools also were lifted.
Police said the teen reportedly showed the gun and ammunition to a group of students at Ventura College shortly before 10 a.m. today. He did not make any threats, but the group of students informed college officials, said Richard DeLaO, chief of police for Ventura College.
The teenager left the Telegraph Road campus on a bike before he was caught. His name was not immediately available this morning.
Foothill is on Day Road, across the street from Ventura College. El Camino just moved to the college campus, and Anacapa is at Telegraph and South Mills roads.

Guess why i am posting this... I was caught up in this bullshit. the fucking little 16 year old was showing off what he called a 45 in the cafeteria this morning. i was less than 6 inches when he showed it off. The guy he showed it off to identified it as a 38.

The Campus was indeed put in lock down but it really wasn't enforced too well.

This is insaine.. why the fuck would this asshole bring a weapon like that to campus, regardless of whether it is a college or high school campus (VC has actually both).
