Square Gamer became SektorSeven recently, and has this up at their main page...or perhaps it was an April Fools Joke...who knows...
In the year 2156, cyber terrorists crashed the stock market and brought all major credit card companies to their knees. The attack was devastating, effectively leaving the United States of America in a state of chaos. Under pressure and in fear of further attacks, and on the verge of war with Japan, computers and electronic entertainment devices are outlawed by The President in a speech that would go down in history.
Square Gamer Corporation. The last remaining (legal and legitimate) software corporation. Employing hundreds of thousands of the world's best programmers. The pioneers of virtual reality gaming and VRUIs (Virtual Reality User Interfaces) for existing software applications in the early 22nd century. Square Gamer Corp. overtook Microsoft and Apple as the leading software and hardware developer in the world. It was several years later, in 2160, that war broke out with Japan. The North American Alliance was unable stop the advancing mecha army, and as a last resort fired an electro magnetic pulse on it's own soil, wiping out the advancing army and neutralizing all computer systems not controlled by Square Gamer Corporation or the government. Japan was left with no army to invade North America and in retaliation launched a nuclear attack, destroying all major cities.
With no real governing body remaining, and most of North America's major cities in ruin, Square Gamer Corp takes over and declares the entire west coast an off limits biohazardous zone. The leaders of Square Gamer Corp. declare martial law and construct a huge fortress in the middle of what remains of the city of Vancouver, just north of Seattle and the U.S. border. The Square Gamer building stands 300 stories tall, well above the biohazard zone below. Surrounding it is a 50 foot high barricade and landmines. On the 300th floor is a room labeled "Heaven & Hell". Inside this room is the world's first nuclear powered computer, code named "SEVEN". With the earth scorched, Square Gamer Corp would create a virtual online city to sell to the highest bidders. Giving the rich a new world and leaving everyone else to die in the slums below. With a headband like VR device people all over the world would be able to log on to a new world through SG Corp's satellites.
Over half a decade later, The Virtual Online City project is completed in 2167 by a team of hackers recruited by SG Corp. Just before the city was to launch, the eight programmers disappeared. It was rumored that they resented the corporation's plans for their creation and decided to not complete the project. A few weeks later one of them was found dead in the slums, her brain fried by a VR device. The next day a radio broadcast was heard across the continent.
"In this world controlled by dictators who care only about money and power, we will give hope and freedom to those who stand with us against SG Corp. There is a city where we will be united. We who created Sektor Seven will take back what is rightfully ours and give it to the people. We are Wild Seven."
The hackers known as Wild Seven gave access to Sektor Seven to anyone who could obtain the VR device needed. The city is self contained, and you are allowed access only after completing a test to prove yourself. Once you have completed the test you are assigned to "class" and given a home. You are given a new identity, and must work your way up the ranks of Sektor Seven to make your class the most powerful. Welcome to Sektor Seven, the first online city.
