  • Fast-food worker returns $185,000 check

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080102/...iches_returned

NORWICH, Conn. - Reggie Damone just wanted to jot down a phone number when he picked up what he thought was litter on a sidewalk this week. But what he found was an envelope containing a $185,000 check.

Damone, who receives food stamps and works at McDonald's, said he didn't think twice about trying to cash it. Instead, the 47-year-old took a bus Monday from his Jewett City home to a bank and returned the check to the niece of the landlord to whom the check was written.

She thanked Damone with a $50 bill.

Damone said that although he knew $185,000 could pay his rent and other bills for a long time, he was never tempted to try to cash it and splurge.

He says he remembered his mother's words: If you take something, you lose three times that amount — and if you do something good, something good comes back to you.

Maybe. Also, it was made out to someone else.

I bet it wasn't. I bet they left it blank. Even if he would have cashed it, they would see who had done it.

Nah. Read the second paragraph. He returned it to the niece of the landlord to whom the check was written. Hence, it was already written out to a landlord.

Maybe. You just have to have last word, don't you? I bet he thought he was going to get more than 50 dollars though. "Show me Damoney !"

Yeah; fifty dollars is a pretty lame prize for that. You'd think they'd at least give him a grand or something. Then again, it's not like they're obligated to give him anything...eh, and landlords are used to sob-stories, and generally stingy, heh.

Having a check written out to somebody else is totally useless, but for something like that the victim who was supposed to have it might be rather happy to get the money. I didn't know you could write out checks for that size of payment, though.

Yeah, you can write a check for pretty much whatever you want. It'll just take a long time to clear if it's big enough.
