  • Sony Pictures making Metal Gear movie

Executive confirms his movie studio is working on the live-action adaptation of the seminal stealth action series.

    By Tor Thorsen, GameSpot

At the Electronic Entertainment Expo last year, Konami revealed that work had begun on a live-action movie based on Metal Gear Solid. The news broke via a pamphlet for Studio Kojima, the Konami-owned development house headed up by Metal Gear series creator Hideo Kojima.

"I have received many offers to adapt Metal Gear Solid. It has taken a long time, but we have finally settled on an arrangement," Kojima said in a statement. "False facts aside, a movie project is underway. I have finalized a Class-A contract with a party in Hollywood."

For eight months, the identity of the aforementioned "party" was unknown. That changed this week, when Sony Pictures Entertainment vice chairman Yair Landau revealed his studio is developing the project.

"We're working with the Metal Gear guys," Landau told GameSpot following his D.I.C.E. Summit keynote in Las Vegas. "It's a very cinematic game, it really lends itself to movie-telling. But the question is, 'How do you translate Snake's experience into a full arc that conforms to what audiences expect on the large screen?'"

Landau also hinted the Metal Gear Solid movie may just be the beginning. "There are other games we are looking to develop," the executive said. "We're working with one of my favorite producers right now on an idea for an EverQuest movie." The producer was apparently of such stature that Landau declined to name him. "I'll let him disclose that," he said cryptically.

Besides the forthcoming World of Warcraft film, currently in development at Warner Bros., the Metal Gear Solid movie is the highest-profile game-film project in Hollywood. Previously, that that stature was held by the Peter-Jackson-produced Halo adaptation, which imploded last year.

A Metal Gear Solid movie makes a lot more sense than one based off various MMORPGs... If they do this right, it could be quite good.

There is already a movie like Metal Gear. It is called Escape from New York. Snake Pliskin is the original Snake!

Though this looks interesting and i will see it when it comes out.
Cant stand the 32 bit and above gaming.
Gamers for the return of 2d sprite filled games!

Heh, yeah @ Escape From New York.

"But the question is, 'How do you translate Snake's experience into a full arc that conforms to what audiences expect on the large screen?"

I hope they don't try too hard to "translate" it, as they do so many other game-based movies. The style of storytelling in the game works well, but these bastards are always trying to find a way to appeal to the non-gamers...

Yeah; he doesn't look that dissimilar, and the voice would be perfect that way.

Metal Gear Movie to Star Solid Snake, Kojima to Advise

An interview with David Hayter by Game Informer in 2001, showed that Hayter wished for the then-unconfirmed Metal Gear Solid movie to be animated or made in CGI, possibly so he could provide the voice of Solid Snake. He also wished to write the screenplay for the film, going so far as writing an unused treatment.

His work with Metal Gear Solid has also led Hayter to other video game voices, such as characters in Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, by Silicon Knights, who also developed Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes for the Nintendo GameCube. He also cited the Metal Gear series as an influence on his screenwriting, stating that "Kojima and I have different styles," "but I've certainly learned things from him, especially about ambiguity and telling a story without giving all the answers."

It has been confirmed that Solid Snake will serve as the protagonist in the recently announced film based on the Metal Gear Solid franchise.

The news was announced earlier today by Hideo Kojima himself during a developer session at the Eurogamer Expo. Kojima went on to add that he will not have a hand in directing the movie or writing the script, but rather oversee the project in an advisory role.

As for who will play the legendary Solid Snake, Kojima revealed that at one point they considered Hugh Jackman before deciding to go with someone who isn’t all that well known. He also expressed his faith in producer Avi Arad to do a solid job is casting for the movie.
