  • Pothole jolts man's heart rate back to normal

Most people complain about potholes, but a Nebraska man may have one to thank for saving his life.

WOWT reports an ambulance from the town of Gretna was en route to Lakeside Hospital, transporting a patient with a racing heart. The man's heart reportedly hit a rate of 200 beats per minute.

As paramedics worked to get his heart rate down, the rig hit a pothole and the man's heart rate went back down to normal.

Dr. Andrew Goldsweig of Nebraska Medicine it's a rare phenomenon, but totally possible.

"One way to treat that is with an electrical shock. Classically, you'll see it on television. The paddles... clear... and a big jolt. Turns out, you can do that with a pothole," Goldsweig said

The doctor recalled a case from the late 70s, where a patient's heart rate went back to normal after an ambulance hit a speed bump.

Friends of the patient in Nebraska say they expect the man to fully recover.
