Homeless Man, GoFundMe Couple Charged In Scam

Mark D'Amico and Kate McClure – the New Jersey couple who went viral for raising $400,000 for a homeless man after they said he helped with their car – as well as the homeless man himself, Johnny Bobbitt, have all been charged with second degree theft for allegedly scheming people out of their money.

TODAY national investigative correspondent Jeff Rossen shares some tips with the TODAY team about how to stay careful when using crowdfunding sites.

If people are stupid enough to fall for something that's their problem. I don't see why the government has to get involved. Also, when the government does this to people it's called taxes and that's perfectly fine? Is there a difference? Especially when politicians use the taxpayer money to ruin families. I don't know, this "scam" seems a lot milder than taxes or even immoral, unconstitutional civil fortitude which is government theft of property and money.

(Granted we need a few basic requirements for society to exist and function such as basic welfare, military and regulatory agents for corporations, etc so some taxes are necessary.)

Mark D'Amico, Kate McClure and Johnny Bobbitt are charged with conspiracy and theft by deception. GoFundMe said it will refund all 14,000 donors what they gave.

If only three people who scammed GoFundMe donators had stuck together and developed a better plan, they probably would have gotten away with it. That's what one expert is saying now that charges have been filed against three people in a case that began as a feel-good story, but has now turned into a fraud case.

I'm writing a big study on the homeless right now, and the numbers are staggering.

I first heard about it, I was terrified. If you just stroll up to a garbage can in our country, you'll see a lot of individuals like that. So, of course, we'll have to think about it and discuss it several times. For example, you can read these essays on the subject at homelessness essay https://studydriver.com/homelessness-essay/ , which are written by a variety of authors and raise the issue very well and competently, so you can gain a better understanding of this terrible phenomenon and how it frequently becomes the norm, despite the fact that it should not.
