  • The real reasons video games are easier today

Once upon a time, it was easier to earn a doctorate in nuclear rocket surgery than become a video game master. That's because many games were just ridiculously hard, requiring countless lost lives and dozens of Game Overs before the typical player could even sniff the ending.

Today, however, many games are far easier to beat than their gnashed-teeth-causing predecessors.

But why? It's not because today's gamers are soft – the truth is more complicated than that.

    There's multiple reasons.

We weren't always able to save our progress in games, I think it was Apogee that were maybe the 1st that allowed you to save progress in their games. Hated a lot of old Nintendo games for having no such thing. Battletoads In Battlemaniacs on the SNES is so stupidly hard it's practically impossible to beat even with a ton of codes on, you just need codes to skip levels or you might as well not even try. No saves, no anything, and you've got a 99.99999999999999% guaranteed failure rate on level 3, and it gets worse in level 4 and 5 and then kind of chills out on the difficulty a little. Skynet could play that game and probably fail every time.

Games are also easier because it's not fun taking hours of your life to lose over some microscopic slight miss and an enemy takes you out or whatever and then you start over again. I said screw that to games that did that, stopped playing them and their sequels and anything else related because my time is more valuable than just losing over and over for so little to gain. Odds are a good chunk of the people that make games these days grew up playing some of the stupidly hard early generation games that were as good as unplayable, and they refuse to do it like them. Nobody likes old cheating CPUs mixed in with gameplay that only people who can pull a Matrix style hail of bullets dodge would have the coordination to even have a chance. I hated the old unfair Mortal Kombat CPUs, if they want to hit you, they will and you can never defend against it. Burnout 3 CPUs were impossible to beat. Doing level 3 in Battletoads was almost the equivalent of what it's like to dodge bullets.

Easier games lure in more gamers meaning more money to continue making games too.

Most games no longer have cheat codes though, so they've lost that little handicap tool for many. No more main menu or pause menu or wherever button codes to have infinite health, lives, ammo, and whatever else. You mostly don't need them anymore either though.

At this point in time though, games are just becoming clones of themselves and becoming boring. Everybody is copying everybody around them and it's all the same with tiny changes but nothing interesting. We need more good stories. A game without an interesting story is just another boring turd. I just keep seeing countless people hop online and kill each other and cuss at each other nonstop. They've become toxic garbage. We need more things like God Of War, Psychonauts, Okami, Zelda, The Last Of Us, Resident Evils, Silent Hills, Fallouts, and anything with an interesting story. At this point it's kind of hard to come up with new interesting gameplay, it's kind of all been done at this point. It annoys me to see Resident Evil 7 isn't getting a lot of gameplay these days, it's a short game, but it's good and didn't just become another crappy clone of everything else out there where the story was the last on the list and online play with loot boxes and leveling up crap are the only things anybody focuses on.

They should be making games easier yet and just start putting in the sorts of codes we make so none of us need to be doing this junk. I keep getting annoyed making codes and wondering why they don't just put these things in their games with a special play mode where you can just do whatever you want. Throw in codes to unlock everything, be invincible, have every item, unlimited items/ammo, enemies die from any damage, just throw in everything they can think of and leave it open for others to add things in and make it a separate mode or something. Some games can be annoyingly difficult, and then I try making codes and it's difficult too to the point where I want to slap the developers of the games for their bullcrap, ESPECIALLY when the entire damned game is offline with no VS or competitive stuff or DLC. No excuse for that bullcrap. There's no online mode to cheat against and attack other legit players, so don't lock it up like it's Fort Knox or something. I'm looking at Batman Arkham City, the worst I've ever tried making any codes for. I could slap those people.
