  • Official PlayStation Magazine Discontinued

Citing the advent of downloadable game demos and an inability for the magazine to 'fit into our integrated media network or afford us digital media opportunities', Ziff Davis' Official PlayStation Magazine will be closed out in January of next year.

From the Gamasutra article: "According to the firm, Sony Computer Entertainment America will remain a key content and marketing partner for Ziff Davis Game Group, which will cover SCEA's PlayStation 3 and first-party games extensively across all of its media outlets, including EGM, 1UP.com, and GameVideos.com.

The Game Group editorial team will also 'work closely with SCEA in the development of digital content for the PlayStation Network, accessible only through the PS3.'

Due to the long-term decline in the magazine advertising market, Ziff Davis has been gradually transitioning away from print for some time, aggressively building up 1UP.com as its central website portal."

1up is carrying a story with the official announcement and some low-key commentary. If you're interested in how much this had to do with subscription numbers, GameSetWatch has a run-down on subscribers for many of the large gaming rags.

I'm not surprised. I haven't been interested in gaming mags for some time, specifically because the info is equally available on the 'net, and sometimes quicker.

I am not surprised. I used to really like this magazine but, the last few years it sucked pretty bad. I didn't even want to subscribe anymore..

Other than the demo discs that came with the magazines, they're generally crap. Same stuff you can find online for free given any remote motivation towards getting it.

I think it may be my fault... I bought every issue, right from the beginning, but the last 3 or 4 I never picked up. I thought that maybe it was cancelled because of me... heh. :P

Other than the once a year swimsuit issue i lost interest especially since i was getting the magazine when i didn't own a playstation. that is the downside of purchasing a 5 year subscription to NextGeneration gaming Mag and they fold up and are bought out by PSM.
Cant stand the 32 bit and above gaming.

Sigh! I threw away all my NextGen and PSM mags. I had a 15yr subsription to Nextgen that wittled down to 4 yrs when PSM bought them out. Sigh. No more looking at the summer swimsuit editions. Heh. The first Next Gen i had its main article was about "THE NEW NINTENDO SYSTEM" which happened to be the N64DD. The last PSM was talking about Snake Eater and the upcomming PS3 and its funky controler.

Hmm what should i do with all these Nintendo power Magz from 1992-2003?
