  • Oregon Man Left Partially Blind By 1963 Eclipse

PORTLAND, OR – A Portland man who watched a solar eclipse in 1963 says the experience left him partially blind in one eye, according to KPTV, and now he wants everyone to know the warnings about eye damage during the eclipse are no joke.

I wonder if anybody above the age of 18 really believes it is a joke??? I can't imagine more than my father's dorky joke comment he used to always say that sounds like it would fit here, "It's communist propaganda."

But it's true--even the sun's corona is so bright it can cause severe eye damage if looked at directly with the naked eye. It's just normally blotted out by the sun itself. Only thing even brighter than the sun is a nuclear explosion or a lightning flash. Lightning, however, will not damage your eye if you see it, because it's such a brief flash that what you really see is the aftereffects of the lightning. (the impulse from your retina telling you that you just saw a lightning bolt only travels at about 200 mph, so is FAR slower than the actual lightning flash, which is roughly 80% the speed of light).
      Tempus fugit, ergo, carpe diem.

Time flies, therefore, seize the day.
