  • Working To Save VHS Tapes Before They Decay

Even if you are still holding on to a VCR, your VHS tapes won’t last forever. Videotape is magnetic, and as a result, the data recorded on it won’t be readable forever.

Magnetic tape’s life expectancy is only between 10 and 30 years PDF.

Some archivists and enthusiasts, though, are trying to combat this inevitable loss, according to NPR.

There are some movies where the VHS releases have extra or different scenes compared to the DVD or BluRay releases. It's a shame if those are lost.

I don't miss dealing with "tracking" on VHS tapes or the annoying process of skipping forward and backwards through them along with the bad sound quality. What missing scenes are we missing if VHS tapes die??? All I can think of is various little things in shows that got a re-release after people realized something bad was either snuck in or left in.
