Are there mouse wheels that don't suck?

Would anybody ever have played on online game and had a mouse wheel that isn't a piece of garbage? I've been playing Left 4 Dead 2 and this piece of garbage mouse wheel to go up and down my items is junk. It either moves twice or not even once. It's so random I keep getting killed because I can't reliably switch items correctly, and it angers me a lot that I want to crush this thing with a sledge hammer. It doesn't matter if it's games or what it is, I've tested many times just intentionally moving the wheel or or down 1 and sometimes a program doesn't detect it and other times it somehow gets it twice.

I have a mouse that cost me a mere 5 bucks that has a decent mouse wheel. But, it's kind of hard to push it down to cast spells in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.
But, it's not TOO bad. And no, I don't think a "perfect mouse wheel" even exists. Such a concept must be beyond the comprehension of even the best mouse manufacturers.
