A ticket taker at Cinépolis in Chelsea, — where a large popcorn costs a wallet-shrinking $8.25 — went full-prison guard, searching customers’ bags with a flashlight to find outside food last Monday.

Moviegoers who try to smuggle in snacks are forced to shame-eat before they are allowed inside theaters at the multiplex.

A guard busted one woman and banished her to a drab corner seating area to gobble down the forbidden food before a matinee at the West 23rd Street theater.

The woman, who had brought the contraband in a plastic bag, was sent to the popcorn purgatory seating area near the condiment bar.

The hunger games outraged some moviegoers.

“Sounds like a power trip,” said Adam Schiff, 24, a Brooklyn student who saw “Rogue One” on Friday.

“Clearly the owners want to punish moviegoers by forcing them to sit in an isolated area,” he fumed.

But sneaking in snacks should be fair game at a theater that charges $17.75 for a ticket, $5.25 for a large soda and $4.25 for candy, other customers said.

“If they want people to buy food, then don’t sell popcorn for way too much,” slammed Maria Costa, a 24-year-old student from Brooklyn.

When a Post reporter tried to bring a burger and fries into the theater on Friday, a ticket taker warned her, “Be careful — please make sure you throw everything in the garbage [after you eat it] so I don’t get in trouble.”

A Cinépolis spokeswoman claimed employees were actually looking for weapons.

“Our policy is, if a guest comes in with a large bag, it’s searched for safety reasons. If food is found during that search, guests are asked to finish food outside theater or bring it to their cars.

That’s probably what these people encountered,” said M.J. Salcido, a rep for the theater.

With the crazy prices of the food in theaters, I'll only ever smuggle food in. I at least have the courtesy to not make a mess and throw my wrappers and stuff in the garbage. We can thank the douchebags who smuggle in a ton and leave chewed gum on seats and that sort of crap for giving theater employees the ammo for the excuse about not wanting to clean up our mess. I remember reading about 1 guy who smuggled in some stuff and started cooking stir fry in his seat while in the theaters, but I don't know where it happened.

It was this guy he worked at the theater where it happened.

LOL, cooking stir fry. I like theatre popcorn so I don't bring outside food. I know theatres make their money from the snacks tho. They don't make much from selling a ticket.

That's definitely the one I saw along with that picture and the right site. It was in one of those "Workplace stories" sort of picture threads, and those had some very interesting stories.

Theaters would hate my attitude on buying their food if I worked at them. I'd be the guy not pushing sales of their food and if people asked me if they could bring their own snacks, I'd tell them yes as long as they don't make a mess that I need to clean up. I wish they had some better way of surviving rather than heavily overpricing snacks, nobody likes paying 5x or more times the price on something.

I rarely go to the movies anymore with all the nuances of people being loud, coughing, crying babies.

n some places it is illegal for movie owners to do anything about food and drinks, because all you are doing is paying for a ticket. Sure, owners can be dicks and put up a sign if it is private property that states no outside food or drink permitted in places where it is legal. I agree that vustomers are only buying a movie ticket and shouldn't be forced to pay for overpriced candy and shitty hotdogs. :V

Its hilarious to see people going overboard and cooking inside.

Like I said, I only go to the movies with friends, never by myself. Then again, I can just stay at home and eat whatever I want and not have to worry about having a bad experience.

If a may add I play Devil's Advocate in this situation. I am not a Coke person. I simply will buy the movie theater popcorn because it's good but bring in Mountain Dew or something and I openly tell them about it. It actually works at some theaters because it's a sealed plastic bottle plus I used the excuse of I'm already buying a ticket I just bought popcorn and I simply don't like Coke or I have allergic reaction to it or something haha. I think they don't say anything to me is because I'm a regular, I'm honest, and I use the excuse that I spend enough money as it is so they're not going to turn me away sometimes it works ha.

Those are some good excuses for bringing your own pop tho. I also enjoy the popcorn. It's the butter.

My friends and I usually sneak in a pop or some candy, but we always buy the popcorn.
My movie theaters honestly don't care though.

                    I do not take requests!
