The owner of a weekly upstate New York newspaper says a man bought hundreds of copies of the publication in an unsuccessful effort to keep others from reading about his drunk driving arrest. State police arrested 43 year old Joseph Talbot last Thursday in Wayne County and charged him with driving while intoxicated. Police also charged him with refusing to be fingerprinted or photographed after he told troopers he didn’t want his mugshot in the paper. Ron Holdraker, editor and owner of the 12,000 circulation Times of Wayne County, says the paper obtained a mugshot from the county jail and printed it along with a story on Saturday. Both were posted on its website. Holdraker says Talbot bought nearly 1,000 copies at $1.25 each.

I almost feel bad for Joseph Talbot, he comes from a generation where everyone got their news from print media, so he thought he could hide his recent DUI arrest by buying 1,000 issues of his local newspaper. Joseph Talbot forgot that print media is dead, everyone gets their news from the internet now, and that his DUI arrest would be on the first page of his local newspaper’s website.

Ironically for Joseph Talbot, his attempt to buy out every last copy of his local newspaper went viral, and now people worldwide are laughing about his stunt on blogs like SportSmasher.com. I do give Joseph Talbot an “A for effort” which is well deserved after trying to buy out the local newspaper, but I bet that he wishes he had the $1,250 he spent on newspapers back, he could put this money towards his legal fees.
