  • Ghost In The Shell Trailer

An extended look at the live action, western version of Ghost In The Shell, based on the Japanese franchise about cyborg consciousness in futuristic Tokyo. Scarlett Johansson plays cyborg hero Major Motoko Kusanagi (known simply as "The Major" in this film), whose spirit is human and whose body is robotic.

Fans of the original franchise, which includes both manga and anime series, have been dismayed about this adaptation ever since Scarlett Johansson was cast as The Major.

Comic book writer Jon Tsuei argued that the series is fundamentally about Japanese culture and history, especially its relationship with technology after World War II. By casting Johansson, who is neither of Japanese descent nor native to Japan, the story becomes something fundamentally different.

Nothing against Scarlet or anyone, but I don't see there being a good chance that many people who have ever seen the anime or movies or the manga are going to watch this and like it for some reason even though I don't know a thing about how they are going to do it. If they wanted a cyber future movie whatever, they could have gone with making something out of Deus Ex. Whatever they are doing with this movie, I'd be beyond blown away if they made something that was more awesome than the laughing man. I'd assume they'll probably try to make it sort of like the first GitS anime movie they did back in the early 90's or late 80's or whenever, but I really can't imagine anything about this series done in a satisfying way like this.

I also read mentions of this movie being in the making months ago, probably over a year ago at this point. It makes me wonder what happened to whatever that rumor was where they were going to make a movie of Akira with Leonardo Di Caprio.

I don't really think scarlett is bad casting. It's just a robot and it don't have to be Japanese. But they should have hired Japanese people to play all the people with Japanese names.

Well, the 1996 movie isn't very good anyway, SAC series are way better.

I haven't seen it and have no interest. How could it possibly compare to the awesomeness of the anime? I'll care when I see a ton of people online praising it because somehow they nailed it, but I don't believe that'll ever happen. I haven't checked rotten tomatoes or whatever that site is, but I doubt I'd see a good approval rating for the show.

I never saw the anime. But it looks like a good movie to me. I'm going to see it.

I don't watch a movie or avoid watching it solely based on who is playing in it. I watch movies for the stories they contain. This one appears to be a quite good one, which seems to give me a bit of a "31st-century Matrix vibe". In short, AWESOME. It may not be true to the original Ghost in the Shell anime or manga, but...most people watching this movie won't know that.
