  • Twitch troll tries to donate $50k then chargeback as a prank. It ends bad.

Full video of him donating live here:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zf5sBvfaI-Q

Guy named "iNexus_Ninja". He was donating in chunks of 1k to 2k, and sometimes upwards of 5k a pop. There were multiple twitch streamers, and the total payout was ~$50k across all of them.

They actually got to keep the money in the end apparently. Paypal denied his request for a refund.

Holy shit. Too bad I missed my big chance to get an extra few grand playing solitaire or something.

I don't know why he thought Paypal would let him get away with that unless he was using somebody else's account. Maybe a transaction or two they'd allow a chargeback on with the fat-finger excuse, but not dozens. No merchant would want to use their service if "LOL J/K" was sufficient justification to reverse transactions.

This is the type of troll that really makes me sick. Donate a bunch of money to various charities...then demand it back because it was "all a joke"? That's beyond low. This sort of prank should earn some prison time, IMO.
      Tempus fugit, ergo, carpe diem.

Time flies, therefore, seize the day.

I agree. Cause the guy waited a month there was a good chance they spent alot of the money. When He takes his money back it would leave them with a negative balance, which they would have to pay back, or have their paypal account closed. There should be a cap on how many chargebacks you can do at once. At least Paypal investigated this one and found him at fault. This kinda prank has been done before to streamers, I know one was getting away with it cause he was 15. I don't know why his account wasn't closed for it tho. Some people get away with it too.

Paypal probably can't cap chargebacks. With a hard cap on, someone who compromised an account would just have to make more than X number of purchases to screw someone over. They could say that some number of chargebacks triggers an automatic investigation, though, and that rule probably does exist, if only internally.

A scammer can always claim that somebody compromised their account, and if they do things right, it could be hard to prove otherwise until a pattern emerges. And the dispute resolution system has a bit of a bias to the payer. So if they do a handful of chargebacks on transactions made from another location, or if they use the "little brother" excuse, Paypal may just do the refunds without investigating further. Then the scammer just has to stay off Paypal's radar for a while.

Also, I wonder how easy it is to set up a fake-ish Paypal and tie stolen credit cards to them? I wouldn't be entirely surprised if some people "got away" with chargebacks because they didn't even originate them. It was somebody's bank reclaiming money for a defrauded customer. Even if the thief got caught without any fanfare, there'd be nothing Paypal could do to make it right for the recipients, aside from absorbing the costs.

Multiple chargebacks triggering a investigation will have to do. It's better than nothing.
