  • Splenda Ingredient, Sucralose, Linked To Leukemia

(FOX 13) - New research shows the main ingredient in the artificial sweetener Splenda, called sucralose, has been linked to leukemia.

Italian researchers published their findings in the January edition of the International Journal of Occupational and Environmental Health.

The study found "significant dose-related increased indicence of males bearing malignant tumors" and a "significant dose-related increased incidence of hematopoietic neoplasias in males" after being fed high amounts of sucralose for their lifespan.

Researchers pointed out similar studies conducted on behalf of Splenda's manufacturer did not show the same carcinogenic effects.

The study's findings, according to the researchers, "do not support previous data" that sucralose is harmless.

"More studies are necessary to show the safety of sucralose, including new and more adequate carcinogenic bioassay on rats. Considering that millions of people are likely exposed, follow-up studies are urgent."

According to the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), sucralose is made by chemically reacting sugar (sucrose) with chlorine. The Italian research study said sucralose is approximately 600 times sweeter than sucrose and used in over 4,500 products.

The FDA set the "acceptable daily intake" for sucralose in children at 5 mg/kg. The CSPI said a 6 year old child weighing 45 pounds would exceed the that limit by drinking two or three 12 ounce sodas containing the typical 40-60 mg of sucralose per can.

When has anyone ever put a product out on market and been the first to admit to this kind of thing and do a mass recall? It's not like a recall where Tyson finds some of their product possibly tainted and causing salmonella. Humanity is the test subject and nobody's ever going to take the tobacco industry's crown. It's like the dumb "hover" boards. "What!? Our batteries burst into flames and destroy lives? But the tests didn't show that." Yeah well a longer than 1 month test isn't very doable, the longer the test the longer the price the bigger the loss of profit. No medieval days of a food tester, and even if there was we'd need to feed them intentionally to death and study the corpse to verify what they ate didn't interact with their special genetics to cause it like people that can't handle peanuts or gluten. Too much needed to prove anything unless somebody dies within a week. Even then, Mr Krabs kicks in screaming "UR LOSIN ME MUNAAAAAAY!!!!" or you go broke and die. You can kill customers and take their money or admit a problem that will possibly permanently destroy your life, who ever has the consideration?

It's rare to see somebody admit to something or do something about their product in such a way to uplift the spirit of humanity. It's always possible they aren't lying when they say they found nothing, but we'll never know if did a lot of testing and found not the slightest thing or if maybe they found a few things and shrugged them off as nothing which would have very obviously hinted at this if they didn't just have a bunch of cancer riddled labrats and said to themselves "Well mice are obviously different than people, so..."

I was thinking a little bit of switching to the fake sugars. I don't make tea very often tho. I hope they get rid of that ingrediant or I'm gonna have to try to get a different brand if I ever get a box of that product.

Chemicals that aren't supposed to be in our bodies will interfere with the regulatory balance and cause problems. That's just common sense.

I kind of used to be on the paranoid conspiracy theory psycho bandwagon for a long time until it really just seemed too much like they were idiots that take the potential slightest crumb of anything and go nuclear with a mentality of "EVERYBODY'S TRYING TO KILL ME I'M NOT CRAZY THE CORPORATIONS AND CHEMICALS AND BLAH BLAH BLAH" but it just wouldn't make sense and it relies on the world being the next best thing to the 1988 movie "They Live". I'm sure this will be more fuel for the crazies that follow https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural_News and garbage like that. I kind of doubt they'd intentionally put out something like this that tests on whatever they tested on showed a bunch of cancerous tumors, but the right kind of people can always skew a test to make money. I remember reading years ago of a science fair project that I can't remember the exact purpose of involving flies and 20 or 30 different fake sugars or whatever you call them where this would fall into the category, but for no obvious reason they found 1 very specific fake sugar basically destroyed flies. It wasn't the purpose of the project, they just noticed it as it stood out as incredibly obvious and there'd be no way of ignoring it because it could have been having very bad effects on people. I'm wondering if this exact fake sugar was that one, but at the same time I'd think the news of those results would have reached the creators of the fake sugar and they'd have investigated unless it was a lazy case of "Flies aren't people." That's only 1 thing I remember, I'm too lazy to read science stuff any more, could have been all kinds of stuff discovered with various fake sugars over the years hinting at various ones being dangerous for human consumption.

The public is unfortunately the only real labrat for things, testing takes a lot of cash, but if this world threw away the cash hurdle or any hurdle that is the next best thing to "Make it sell or die", odds are we'd still be seeing this kind of thing because it's not easy to spot it. Centuries ago people probably spotted things like this and got criticized or or worse. "What, some people ate my special stew and died, and it was this ingredient? How do you know it's this ingredient? You must be a witch!" and then far into the future people have the technology to investigate and found Celiac disease and whatever various allergic reactions.
