  • User Names Reveal The Age And Psychology Of Game Players

Your online name can reveal a lot about you.

Researchers from the University of York and Riot Games have shown that information harvested from the user names of players who signed up to 'League of Legends' can sometime reveal both their ages and how they behave online. And the short story is that both younger players and players with obnoxious names are more likely to exhibit toxic online behavior.

The same could be said of horoscopes, sometimes they're right, but so can a clock without a battery, without good and reliable evidence it's as good as meaningless coincidence.

So what does that have to do with a username telling something about you?

This whole "username reveals your age" is complete balderdash, IMO. I've been using the name "xirtamehtsitahw" for about 15 years. Does it mean I haven't aged a day since then? Of course not. Case closed.

Time flies, therefore, seize the day.

Generally this sort of study is looking for broad trends as a matter of interest, not a 100% accurate way of assessing someone that everybody should put into practice immediately. Take for example when a study is done comparing the success rate of chimps throwing darts at stock symbols to professional investment advisers. The fact that in the aggregate the advisers don't do significantly better than pure chance doesn't mean every adviser is just guessing, or that every piece of advice one gives is exactly as likely to be good as tossing a dart.
