  • If you want to hack Wii U games stay on fw5.3.2! putative kernel exploit release soon

Nitendo has just kicked out a new Firmware update that updates the console to 5.5.0. It removes the Tvii app but also patches one of 2 kernel exploits the community over GBATemp is working on. Since the developer of the exploit (MarioNumber1) sees no reason in keeping it secret since it's patched he's thinking about releasing it sooner or later. But the Webkit exploit that is working on 5.4.0 is not patched. To keep it functioning as long as possible, this one won't be release, to prevent Nintendo from patching it.
This means 5.3.2 might be the only fw allowing us to hack Wii U games.

    Sources:
    5.5.0 FW update: https://gbatemp.net/threads/firmware...ut-now.395225/
One Kernel Exploit is now patched and might be released: https://gbatemp.net/threads/firmware.../#post-5623833
5.4.0 Webkit bug unpatched and won't be released. But the kernel exploit: https://gbatemp.net/threads/wii-u-ha...2#post-5624314

I can't promise that the exploit will really be released soon, since announced releases were always delayed.

I bought my family a Wii U. I got it as a family gift for everyone on Christmas, so hacking it is out of the question.
However, this'll be helpful if I ever get my own Wii U.

you could get a (used) Wii U without gamepad for around 100 bucks
      This could be an option

        Don't I need the gamepad???
I'll look into it. How far has Wii U code hacking gotten? Can I hack asm and pointer codes yet?

you can use any gamepad with any wii u. just need to resync them on each console change.
Well, the kernel exploit is not public yet. but this could happen tomorrow, the day after, or maybe in 2 weeks.
But they are developing a code handler to bring breakpoints back to the remote debugger. there will also be a new debugger that runs on the web browser:

But a new codetype is not developed yet. I have asked to give and suggest them my ideas about new functions that could be included, but they didn't answer to it..

            Neato! That's awesome news!

Well. I just learned today that my PowerPC knowledge is garbage.
So I'll pass on hacking asm codes for Wii U. It turns out it's a lot harder to turn a bottle of water into Grandma's Elixer Soup than I thought.

I'll think about getting a Wii U again, but it'll be awhile since I just purchased that NES.

Thank you for keeping the website updated on the Wii U hacking scene.

PPC ASM isn't too hard I think. I struggle more with Javascript and C++ (well, the lack of time might be a factor too).
I'm already planning everything for video tutorials about wii u hacking that will include ppc asm in the later parts
But I still have to learn a lot about mnemonics..

I will keep this thread up to date

You can do alot on WiiU without the WiiU control pad. You can play Wii games, and many Wii U games. Virtual console don't need it. There are some option screens that need the control pad for some reason tho. So you'll have to sync one up if you wanna do things with options.

That's true. There are less games that really require it. Splatoon, Color Zen and Nano Assault Neo are the only ones that come to my mind (and not so sure about Nano assoult..)

Sorry for double post, but the kernel exploit is out now!

As you can read in the comments there needs a sort of "installer" to be released to run TCPGecko...

Once I've got TCPGecko running i will make a small guide based on the tutorials over gbatemp hook it up (at least how I have done it)
