  • I Bought An NES

I purchased an NES a couple days ago, and I just got it today.

A little back-story. When I was 4 we had an NES, I only played it a few times, but I remember loving it though.
My mom and dad would play it all of the time, and my oldest brother actually beat Super Mario Bros. 3 when he was only 3 years old.
I sucked at video games though, my parents would always tell me that I could never jump over the first big hole in Super Mario Bros. on level 1-1 and I would always cry because I could never get over it.

A short while later, I was finally able to get over the hole and continue on, however, our NES broke a short while later...
Needless to say, I never really got to truly enjoy the NES, I only got to play 2 games on it, Zelda 1 and Super Mario Bros. 1.

I have not touched an NES in 18 years. I bought it because I feel like I missed out on something during my childhood, something magical and something wonderful. I feel like I got robbed of a wonderful experience, and I love retro games, so I got it so I could play the games I never got to play. The first thing I noticed was that some games won't work right if you have the cartridge down all of the way.

Super Mario Bros. 3 is one of those games, I have to keep the cartridge up in order for it to work right. I think the Metroid 1 has to be kept up too, I believe. Of course, I will be getting a Game-Genie as well. :P
The controller feels... so...... perfect... I can't describe it, it just feels so right. It feels as good as the SNES controller... I am in love with this system already! Everything feels so wonderful, I haven't felt this happy with a gaming system for a long time now, I am glad I purchased this.

Anyway, I just wanted to share a little something with you guys.
What were your guy's experiences with the NES? What are your fondest memories of it? Do you still play it to this day?

I still play it here and there but I mostly spend time testing mods for it. A few good games (or save up for a flash cart) that I really enjoyed were the Wrath of the Black Manta, Ninja Gaiden Series, Shatter Hand, Contra Series, P.O.W, Mario series (2 is my favorite), Zelda 1 and one game many people don't really know is awesome and that is Phantom Fighter. As a kid if you said it fast enough we would call it Pants on Fire, lol. Did you get the toaster or the toploader?

The D-Pad on those things had very sharp edges. They hurt. Play a little and you'll start getting blisters fast unless you do something to round and smooth those sharp edges.

Or get a dogbone NES controller. Those are awesome. You also should have gotten a top loader of NES. Those are awesome too.

Never knew such a controller existed. I don't know how much better those D-Pad corners are, but they sure couldn't make them any less friendly short of just putting 45 degree angle metal razor blades at the corners. They made sharp very finger-unfriendly corners out of it. You'd be bleeding within hours depending on the game.

I got the original NES, not the top loader.
I haven't had any problems with the controllers hurting me, but I am used to playing Super Smash Bros.4 without the circle pad.
I emulated the Ninja Gaiden series, and those games kick ass! I watched my mom and dad beat Contra when I was very little, then my mom and my oldest brother beat Contra together.

On Saturday, my brother and I are going to a retro game store out of town, and I will be picking up NES games, he will be picking up SNES games. We will also be buying a Dreamcast there too. Here is my list of games I want to pick up.

              1: Contra
              2: Castlevania 1,II,III
              3: Crystalis
              4: Double Dragon
              5: Final Fantasy 1
              6: MegaMan 3
              7: Zelda 1
              8: Zelda 2

These are the most important to me, but I may find others I like there.

Many, many fond memories of playing the NES wither my brothers and friends. I remember one time I was at my cousin's and he was playing Metroid but I don't remember if he beat it that day. I was way too young.

I remember my father Spot, us playing TNMNT and hating it. We always thought it was was the fun arcade game, not that terrible game where you go into the sewers and underwater to detonate a bomb to prevent the dam from exploding. Ugh.

I have two models, one was modded by myself to remove the regional CIC so I could play some PAL games I later bought. The NES is one of Nintendo's greatest consoles ever.

They're sturdy systems too as I used to beat the system literally after it failed to load games soon many times. Double Dragon also has a 1 on 1 mode where I consider it the first real home fighting game. This mode is fun as hell with another person, for whatever reason I like this Double Dragon port better than the arcade and other systems plus those beats are catchy.

When my son was 2 or 3 I started my collection with an NES and a few games. Now I have 3 NES's with different mods and flash carts and about 120 or so original games. Love my collection, and I still get it out and play it. Can't wait for kevtris's HD mod to get released. Gotta keep a pure system around, though.

I gotta call bullshit on beating Mario 3 at 3 years old. I have kids, and I just don't see a 3-year-old having the mental capacity and reflexes to beat any Mario platformer.

Double Dragon is more like the first home fighting minigame. That was just a mode with characters that had roughly all the same moves.

Anyway, all NES controllers should be compatible across both console incarnations. So you can use a dogbone controller with the first NES if you want.

You'd be very surprised at what children are capable of.
Anyway, my dad came up to and told that it was Super Mario Bros. 1. He said he went to go rent it for my brother, but they didn't have it, so they just bought it for him instead. And my mom watched him beat it.

I kind of wish playing video games still felt like it did when those games were relatively new. My little brother beat the original Super Mario one night around midnight when he was 6 or so, and went running through the house shouting, "I saved the bitch! I saved the bitch!" Outside of nerd-rage, I don't think people my age can get that invested.
