  • Sony May No Longer Service Old/Backwards Compatible PS3's

    By Kingsman

Article Name: Sony May No Longer Service Old/Backwards Compatible PS3 Systems

Description: According to ‘zant’, Sony is no longer servicing the old backward compatible PS3′s, as pictured above. He’s only tested the 4 phat serial numbers listed below, but believes that they aren’t servicing the rest of them at all, entirely.

    Date Announced: 7/5/2015

    Source: ’zant’ of ps4news

    Quote via thread by ‘zant’:
I would like to inform everybody that Sony no longer services any of the old PS3 models, most notably the desirable CECHA01, CECHB01, and CECHE01 systems that have backwards compatibility.

Entering the serial number on the PlayStation support site produces and “invalid” result, and refers to phone 1-800-345-SONY (7669) or chat for more options.

Upon phoning Sony, I was told that the old systems were no longer supported, and my only option was to pay $100 to trade in the CECHA01 for a 12GB Super Slim PS3. I laughed and hung up the phone.

Reballing/reflowing and DIY BD drive repairs are the only way forward with these systems now.

“I have not tested ALL the old PS3 phat serial numbers, but I do no they no longer service CECHA01, CECHB01, CECHE01, or CECHG01 systems.” – zant

That's been known for a long time. Lots of people over the years have had it where they send in their BC PS3 to Sony and Sony sends them back the newest model instead and they don't even warn customers. It was BS. They didn't even warn people about it, they just gave you a new slim instead of repairing your system and sending it back to you. Major jerk move, even more when they don't even make PS2s any more.

That's a real bummer. Working versions of those consoles are getting harder to come by.
