  • GameStop may soon accept older consoles and games as trade-ins

    By james_fudge

According to this IGN report GameStop will soon accept older console systems as trade-ins for in-store credit or cash. According to the report, the country's top games retailer will launch pilot programs in its New York City and Birmingham markets. Those two market's represent around 250 retail stores.

According to what a spokesperson for GameStop tells IGN, these locations will begin accepting "games, systems and select accessories for most 'retro' platforms." If GameStop likes the results, it will roll out the program nationally "later this year."

While this is interesting news we are concerned that GameStop may engage in price gouging for some of the retro hardware and software it plans to sell. The company has been known to jack up prices on older software in the past...

We will have more on this story as it develops...

I still wouldn't give them a penny, as that's nearly what they offered me on games previously. They're a business in it for money, and they get it by screwing customers. Buy for pennies, sell for dollars. Continue dying GameFlop.

I like that the stuff is gonna come with a warranty. It'll make it worth buying from them.

I like the idea of GameStop (eventually) embracing the older consoles (such as the SNES and Genesis). I am, however, a little wary about their tendency to often overprice items of that nature. It's as if they charge a "collector's premium" for retro game systems.
