  • Nintendo's next-generation console is codenamed NX

    By Nick Summers

It should come as no surprise to hear that Nintendo is working on a new console. Fresh hardware takes years to develop, so engineers are always working on future systems while the rest of us play on the current generation of consoles. What we didn't expect, however, is for Nintendo to talk about its next system so soon. In today's press conference, where the company detailed its plans to make mobile games with DeNA, it also teased a new system codenamed "NX." Few details were disclosed, other than it'll involve fresh hardware and gameplay concepts. The NX symbol appeared on a slide alongside the Nintendo Wii U, 3DS and other mobile platforms, which suggests it could launch as a complimentary system, rather than an immediate successor to any of its current consoles.

The NX hardware will also tie into a new membership service that Nintendo is developing with DeNA. It's a replacement for Club Nintendo, and will incorporate multiple devices including the Wii U, 3DS and non-Nintendo devices such as smartphones and tablets.

It's no secret that Nintendo's Wii U has been struggling. Despite some standout titles, including Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, the platform hasn't resonated with consumers like the original Wii or the latest hardware from both Sony and Microsoft. Many have wondered how long it will take before Nintendo decides to cut its losses and shift focus to a new console entirely. That would, of course, disgruntle existing Wii U owners, so a new system that sits alongside Nintendo's existing hardware, at least to begin with, makes sense. Chief executive Satoru Iwata says more details about NX will be shared "next year," so don't expect any grand announcements at E3 or the next Nintendo Direct.

I hope the controller don't have a screen on it. It adds too much bulk and some games force you to look at that instead of the tv.

I don't know what form the NX is going to take, but I see that sometime in the not-too-distant future where the concept of the video game console is going to undergo a major paradigm shift--instead of relying on hardware that can't be upgraded and must be replaced with a more powerful version every six years or so, the "consoles" of the future will be entirely composed of 1s and 0s. That's right--the "con-soft" era is going to be here before you know it. "Con-soft" is short for "software-based console".

The only actual hardware involved will be the PC or TV (with controllers) needed to provide visuals and a means for interacting with the games. The games themselves will either be downloaded onto a hard drive or be played straight from the cloud (via a streaming service). This would greatly reduce, if not entirely remove, the limitations often placed on games by the hardware boxes that play them. Instead, the only limitations would be the power of the PC the games were played on, or how advanced an HD smart TV you have (in terms of resolution).

This type of gaming scenario would greatly reduce production costs for any of the Big 3 who attempts such an innovative take on video games.
      Tempus fugit, ergo, carpe diem.

Time flies, therefore, seize the day.

I feel NX going be online service

because the Internet Web browser software on the Wii U & 3DS is named NX (v2.0 out-of-box) (v3.0 after updates)

I think the likeliness of Nintendo releasing a console that uses android as an OS is about as likely 1up mushrooms flying out of my ass.

If you want an android console, get yourself an ouya.
