Okay, so my question now is: It IS legal to have a rom on your computer as long as you own the game, right?

Because I have a few Nintendo games that I want Roms for, because my Nintendo is... out of commission. So, I was wondering if I could get some help finding a few decent ROM sites that might have them. Thanks a ton, and if you need a list, heres a few of them.

Quite a monster of an FAQ... I wouldn't recomend reading it unless you've got some time to kill...

But, even though it's probably illegal, I'm posting links to sites with ROMs anyway. They're just links after all (even if they have illegal data availible for download).

For some reason, it's rather difficult to find Zelda roms... Most of the sites I checked had a huge collection of other games, but oddly no Zelda games on hand... Kind of suspicious to me, but eh, who knows what it is...

ummm well all this talk about roms...err not wanting to sound like I do not know anything about them (though I hardly do really) and I hope 'asking' does not cause trouble nor anything....

But err could maybe someone tell me how you 'play roms' I know a general question, but like the NES, SNES, Genesis, and err well those files called PCE files (or whatever PCE means, ummm PCE seems to refer to a 'system' of some sort.)

Just curious and well...roms are cool... it is something you play on your PC, so if possible, I'd like to know more...err please. Again not wishing to sound like I do not know, but ummmm well I do not know much about it all. Ron was once telling me about roms you could burn and play on your PSX...but blahhh Ron has vanished and been vanished for a while saldy...so....

As far as being 'illegal'...these days blahhh I just do not know, I mean datel (Action Replay people) is now selling the latest AR for PS2 that enables your PS2 to 'play' burnt 'roms' on discs...so if is illegal, seems rather odd, a company specialy those (interact/datel) is out selling something they all preached about never doing for years. But anyway...blahh at it being illegal, I believe it to be the same as LMZ was saying in my PSX music rip topic.

If a friend let's you borrow a game, or anything nothing wrong with copying it, really. I do not think so anyway...which gosh sorta also reminds me of the old old old PSX game discs...heh remeber those game discs that you could just slip into your CD player (even the old wav only kinds) and play the game's music just bypass the first 'data' track.... gosh those were the days, when playing game music, was not as hard to impossible as it is today it seems alot of times....

I think PCE files are PC Engine ROMs, but I'm not quite sure. I believe that was an old piece of hardware NEC made, that wasn't too popular in north america.

Pretty much, to play a ROM, you need an emulator for whatever system that ROM's for. Only problem is, some systems aren't emulated too well, or the emulators don't always support whatever format the ROM is in... And it can be a bit confusing to tell what system a ROM is from, as there's quite a number of different file types, and some of them are used for more than one system (specifically, there's probably dozens of different systems that have .bin ROMs...)

It is possible to play NES (and I think GameBoy as well) ROMs on a playstation. It does require a bit of work to do, and not all games will work. The NES emulator is called It Might Be NES, works quite well, and isn't very hard to burn. Getting roms is probably a bit harder... I forgot the name of the GB one, and I've never tried it, and
don't know if it works very well. To run such an emulator on a psx, you need either a mod chip installed, the modded version of the gspro (which there just so happens to be a copy of in the downloads section), or something else that lets you swap discs to run 'backups'/imports. Using a gspro requires finding some way to jam the door open sensor, the most common things to use are plastic straws or springs (and the right size springs are pretty hard to find).
