  • Unreleased NES Prototype Cartridge of Chip's Challenge

    By Cauterize

Just when you thought you'd played every Nintendo NES game out there, another previously undiscovered title has surfaced on eBay of all places. Arriving on a one of a kind prototype cartridge, bidding has gotten fierce for the 8-bit console port of Chip's Challenge - a fan favorite top down puzzler which first arrived on the Atari Lynx.

Currently sitting at just a few coins short of a thousand dollars, this unpreserved title which isn't available in ROM format has supposedly come straight from a now defunct publisher's licensing and purchasing department. With EEPROM chips stickered up with the date 18th May 1992, it is believe this very cartridge would have been used to display the game at the Summer Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Chicago the same month.

Judging by the screenshots on the eBay auction's gallery, this Nintendo NES port of Chip's Challenge appears to be a visually unique offering which differs to the many other versions of the game. While it's currently unknown whether or not the game is fully playable or in a finished state, we're living in hope that this unreleased title will indeed shared with the community. With various groups working hard to ensure unarchived code such as this ends up in gamers hands, don't be too surprised if we're talking about the Nintendo NES port of Chip's Challenge early in the new year.

Until then, either sit back and watch countless Nintendo NES collectors battle it out on eBay, or treat yourself to an incredibly expensive piece of gaming history as an early Christmas present.
