  • David Jaffe reveals arena shooter Drawn to Death

    By Jeffrey Matulef

God Of War developer David Jaffe has revealed his next project, a PS4-exclusive third-person arena shooter called Drawn to Death.

Announced at the PlayStation Experience opening ceremony, Drawn to Death marks Jaffe's first project at his new studio The Bartlet Jones Supernatural Detective Agency.

Drawn to Death's unique concept is that the game takes place entirely within the notebook of a troubled teenager. So the whole thing is mostly monochromatic and resembles scribbles on paper. All the characters are based around conventionally adolescent stereotypes with plenty of demons, skeletons, mohawks, wristbands, dragons, and violent imagery of his classmates that he doesn't feel so fondly of.

It looks a little something like this:

David Jaffe Reacts To Drawn to Death Criticism with #GoFuckYourself Video

    By Andrew Matt

Over this past weekend at the PlayStation Experience event David Jaffe announced a brand new four player free-for-all shooter that takes place in a high school student’s notebook called Drawn to Death. Unfortunately, it seems that the criticism of the game seen in comment sections around the Internet like Giant Bomb and Polygon has led Jaffe to reply in a very unique fashion.

Jaffe has released a new video on his YouTube channel that features the character Jonny from Drawn to Death reading off fan criticism from a smartphone.

    (This video is private)

    The various comments include:
It looks like Splatoon. Minus Everything I love about Splatoon.

Four player maximum arena shooter? Nah, son.

The art sure takes me back…I don’t know if I like being taken back.

Why in God’s name would I play a 4 player shooter

I think David Jaffe’s entire life is set inside a high school notebook

Who keeps letting Jaffe make games?

I bet this would be great...back in 1998.
The video then wraps up with a very a very poignant message written across the video, stating:

    Thanks for the comments! #GoFuckYourself
Well, that certainly is one way to handle community feedback. Jaffe has never shied away from speaking his mind before and doesn’t appears to be jaded so much as he is enjoying the chance to troll his naysayers with this response. Either way, you can’t doubt his message.

Personally, I very much enjoy the artistic style that Drawn to Death brings to the table, reminding me of the artistic direction games like The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker and Borderlands have used in recent years that have held up well over the test of time. The 4 player action hardly bothers me either, giving players the chance to have more intimate battles with their foes than the massive sprawling battlefields that users are offered in games such as Planetside 2.

Drawn to Death is being developed by The Bartlet Jones Supernatural Detective Agency and is coming exclusively to the PS4 at a yet to be determined date.

I like that visual style. It's rare I see these strange non photo realistic things. They look strangely plain and dumb to people, but I do remember how interesting it was to look at the Quake 1 engine modification of NPR Quake. It was interesting to see. This kind of makes me think of Super Smash Bros meets Under The Skin given the NPR style look and made gory.
