It's a Google game, for starts. So, if you don't like Google for whatever reason, then I'll assume you don't like Ingress as well.
That aside, it was made by Niantic as more of a proof of concept (or so I've read.). Today, a lot of people play it. Both on Android and iOS. The part I enjoy about it is it gets you going outside. You have to go out and find these "portals" on your scanner (the app). Portals can be historical sites, artwork, structures, facilities, or other things.
You have to physically go to these places to be able to interact with the portals. Most people walk. Some people ride bikes. Driving to them is frowned upon, and often people have issues with police wondering why they're driving oddly. It's better to park and walk. Once you get to one, you can either tap hack or hold down hack. The tapping method is quick and easy and may or may not get you some items. The hold-down method leads to a glyph hacking matching game. You have more of a chance of getting items and even better items if you get them all right in the time given.
The goal of the game is to capture the portals for your team. You select one of two teams: Resistance or Enlightenment. Enlightenment wants to use this higher power to help mankind evolve. Resistance wants to stop that because they think it's a danger. To capture a portal, you have to place resonators on it. 8 of them fully powers a portal. It's best to stand as far as you can away from the portal, but keep it within the yellow line. This places the resonators so that they are harder to destroy. A grey portal is neutral. To acquire another team's portal, you must destroy their resonators with weapons.
After you have portals, you can link 3 up to make a field. Fields are what basically makes your territory. They capture Mind Units for you each day. The way you field is up to you. I prefer making tons of them and trying to make double fields. Others want mega fields. There's even designs people have made, even cross faction.
