  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Going 16-Bit

    By Stew Shearer

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is ditching its 3D graphics with a fan made remake that will transform into a 16-bit SNES game.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is easily one of the most important milestones in 3D gaming, providing players with a fleshed out world they could traverse and explore to their heart's content. It was a landmark moment for video games that left players so enamored that many would claim that it still hasn't been surpassed today. It only makes sense them that some of those same players would launch an effort to transform the famous game into a 2D throwback.

That, at least, is the aim of the OOT2D, an ongoing fan project working to recreate Ocarina of Time in the style of its 16-bit predecessor The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. The group's goals include recreating the game's soundtrack, its day/night cycle and even its cutscenes, all in the style of a SNES game. The project itself isn't very far along yet, probably owing to the fact that its founders are creating everything from scratch. Even so, a playable is already available for download.

Just speaking personally, while their objective strikes me as a being a bit odd considering what Ocarina of Time represents, I'd be lying if I didn't admit that the current pieces of finished product don't look cool. As much as I love Ocarina, I have a tremendous soft spot for A Link to the Past. The idea, in turn, of being able to experience one of my favorite games in the style of another one of my favorite games just holds some undeniable appeal.

That's something I'd be greatly interested in, but I don't know how they are going to do the levels that involve a lot of different heights and traversing steps and things using the hookshot.

What's next: 16-bit Twilight Princess? Now, in the words of Carlito, ex-WWE wrestler, "DAT would be cool." *Takes bite of apple, spits in some random direction*
      Tempus fugit, ergo, carpe diem.

Time flies, therefore, seize the day.
