They don't just say "we'll skip 9". What's their marketing angle? "We are so good we make 9 and blaze by it with something far better!" or some crap? They always have some marketing behind every word out of their mouths. "100 reasons you should use internet explorer."

It seems for the last 15 years or so, Microsoft releases a well-received OS every other release. After 98SE was Millenium, or "Me", and that was a complete joke. Then XP was king for a long time. Vista was long-awaited and disappointing due in part to the resource-hog of Aero. When 7 was released, it was well-loved since it was great looking, and ran efficiently. And then we all know about Windows 8. I am OK with 8, though I see it's many faults, but a lot of people are not OK with it at all. Hopefully 10 will win everybody over again?
I do believe they went to 10 to distance themselves from 8. People are not just disappointed with 8, they are pissed off at it. I believe Microsoft does not want people to think 9 is just a tweaked 8, which it kinda is. They brought back some aspects from 7 that people missed, but it still looks like 8.1 at its core.
Personally, before using it and just seeing a couple of videos, I think it should have been called 8.2.

From what I read on a couple of sites and heard over the years, many people feel the same way as you (myself included sans Millennium. Some memorable moments with that OS.
). Before reading the articles about the OS name, I was hoping someone would make the "7, 8, 9" joke, and was not disappointed.
I'll try and test 10 in the coming days, though. I passed on testing 8 due to the trend with touch screen and tiles, but I'm not going to pass on this window of opportunity, to see that oddball OS name appear on my screen.

I still want to test the preview despite that (you can opt-out last I read, but still take precaution on entering stuff you don't want logged). This should be a non-issue by now (but it won't due the revelations), as I don't understand how some people can install software, and not read the privacy notice beforehand. You've most likely been burned after realizing, if you don't have the proper security measures in place (firewall (notifications are not suppressed), anti-virus, etc). I read it tweece.. err.. twice. There is a thread about it on Bleeping Computer, for those wanting to see the possible programs doing the logging and reporting.
