  • PSN, XBL Down After DDoS Attacks, Exec's Plane Under Bomb Threat

    By Devin Connors

Update: Microsoft is confirming what many on social media are reporting: Xbox Live is currently "limited," although the company is not using the word "down." Lizard Squad is hinting that it's behind the outage.

Original Story: Having trouble logging into PSN this weekend? Sony's PlayStation Network servers are down after widespread DDoS attacks took them offline.

A group called Lizard Squad is taking responsibility for the attacks, which have also affected servers for Blizzard's Battle.net, League of Legends, and Path of Exile.

Sony has acknowledged the issues on both its PlayStation, and Ask PlayStation Twitter accounts. Sony Online Entertainment President John Smedley has also commented on the outage.

If the outage wasn't bad enough, a bomb threat was called in on Smedley's American Airlines flight to San Diego. The plane was diverted to Phoenix after the threat.

There is a small silver lining in all of this mess: According to the official PlayStation Blog, no personal information has been stolen in this latest attack.

Like other major networks around the world, the PlayStation Network and Sony Entertainment Network have been impacted by an attempt to overwhelm our network with artificially high traffic.

Although this has impacted your ability to access our network and enjoy our services, no personal information has been accessed.

We will continue to work towards fixing this issue and hope to have our services up and running as soon as possible.

We regret any inconvenience this may have caused
The attacks come shortly before Sony's announced PSN maintenance window, which was scheduled to begin tomorrow, Monday, shortly before 1pm EDT.

Xbox Live goes down for almost a day after PSN hack

        By GaryOPA

Still problems logging in on XB1 and X360 but getting service is getting better

PSN was attacked on Sunday, and Sony spend most of Monday getting it back online, but the same group taking credit for the PSN DDOS attack has been focusing now on the Xbox Live service since Monday!

We reported on the major DDOS attack on Sony's PSN Servers this weekend, that even went as far as 'bomb threats' directed towards the Sony Online CEO because of PSN being totally down across all regions from the 'wave of attacks' which left PSN off for almost 2 days, and just now has become fully restored in all regions around the world.

But as Sony was busy rebooting their network, the hackers moved onto a new target, Microsoft's famed Xbox Live service, the unsinkable ship of servers, and did end-up running into some rough water, and Microsoft was forced to put the system on 'limited' service which caused trouble logging in for some regions, but if you were already logged in and gaming, you never noticed a thing.

The "Lizard Squad" tweeted a message asking if people are having issues with "Xbox Live Login servers". This is the same group that have admitted they were behind the attacks of the PSN as well.

If you look at the Xbox Live status official website, some services are limited at the moment. The issues don't seem to be as widespread as the PSN, but some people are experiencing some troubles logging in.

Game Informer noted they had some issues logging in to the Xbox Live services for Xbox 360, but Xbox One seems to be fine at the moment. If you look for people's reaction on Twitter, there are quite a few people having problems with Xbox Live now too. Pretty sad that now both PSN and Xbox Live seems to be down for a lot of people today.

Microsoft is aware of the issues of Xbox Live and posted the following message:

"Are you having a tough time signing into Live? We want you to know our team is aware of the issue and working hard to get things back to normal as soon as we can. Thank you for being patient. We'll provide an update for you in 30 minutes"
That above was posted yesterday evening, but no updates for a few hours, except now the system is basically up and running totally, except for all those people that grabbed the new Diablo III this weekend, they are still stuck unable to play it on Xbox consoles.
Xbox members, are you having trouble connecting to Party Chat, or running into server unavailability issues within Diablo III? We are currently working with our partner to get these issues fixed as quickly as possible. Thanks for being patient during this process. We'll provide an update to you when we have more information.
Personally, I think this whole DDOS attack stuff going on is to due inpart because of Diablo 3.

Because it actually started on Blizzard's Battle.net servers first before it moved onto PSN and later Xbox.

And the new Diablo 3 Reaper of Souls Ultimate Evil Edition was recently released for both next-gen 'consoles', and alot of loyal PC gamers hate that fact it is on consoles so they decided to launch these DDOS attacks during the time the 'console' version quickly became one of the top-selling games this week.

And since both networks were already overloaded with all the new users logging in from the hot Diablo 3 sales, it would make for a lot easier target to bring down the network via a DDOS style attack a lot faster due to the combination of all new users, and DDOS'ing.

What do you think was the reason behind all the recent DDOS attacks thru-out the major gaming networks?

It sucks to hear about that unnecessary threat with the plane. I had a relative fume at the PSN hack (funny display but they didn't game in a while), and now another with the Xbox (reaction was meh). This is just another woe of online gaming, and probably a test for something more damaging to come. Protect ya net! :P

They were just a bunch of pricks wanting to say they can cause massive havoc without being caught. They didn't have a worthy reason for any of it, just being a problem to others. I hope they all get caught.
