  • Microsoft Black Tuesday Patches Bring Blue Screens of Death

    Posted by timothy

    snydeq writes

"Two of Microsoft's kernel-mode driver updates — which often cause problems — are triggering a BSOD error message on some Windows systems, InfoWorld reports.

'Details at this point are sparse, but it looks like three different patches from this week's Black Tuesday crop are causing Blue Screens with a Stop 0x50 error on some systems.

If you're hitting a BSOD, you can help diagnose the problem (and perhaps prod Microsoft to find a solution) by adding your voice to the Microsoft Answers Forum thread on the subject.'"

Anybody experience this issue yet? I have not on any of the 7 and 8 PCs I service. I do know that it can be fixed with a Linux LiveCD (Hiren's BootCD too), by deleting the fntcache.dat file found in the System32 folder. You can do the same in Windows, by booting into Safe mode and deleting the file. It'll be recreated upon restart.

I've had no issues with mine.

The only thing my PC does do on occasion is stop detecting the sd slot. It even happened when I had Vista.

The sd slot is set as "Removable Disk E" and sometimes disappears after inserting and removing an sd card enough . Completely powering it off then back on fixes the problem.

It could be a faulty driver or port. Uninstall the device and let Windows reinstall it again. See if that helps. Also, give the port a good cleaning, as dust has probably built up in it.

It's a Windows problem. At one time when I lost Vista and couldn't re-install it because my DVD drive stopped reading DVD's I had Ubuntu, installed it from USB (unetbootin) and had it for a few months and never had a problem with the SD slot.

You check your PC manufacturer's site for any updates?

Yeah. But I don't think they carry updates for my PC anymore, unless I'm not looking hard enough.

              It's an Acer Aspire X1200 B1601A. http://answers.walmart.com/answers/1.../questions.htm

              Got it back in 08'

I'll check the site. If the issue wasn't addressed in an update from them, then try asking for help on the Acer or Windows forums.

Nice 1,337 posts, you have there.
