Yep, it's quite late to mention this, but better late than never 
FF7 Rebirth is a mod for the PSX version of Final Fantasy VII which, while leaving the original story essentially intact, 'rebalances' the game in terms of playability and difficulty, and adds layers of new depth to the experience. It's quite impressive.
