  • 3D display using a Kinect

    Uploaded by programming4fun on Jun 22, 2011

Got a Kinect for Father's Day. After two nights of hacking with the new SDK, I created this holographic display effect. What you're seeing is a monitor lying flat on a table. The Kinect detects the position of your head and the software adjusts the image to give the illusion of an object standing on the monitor. This is not post-processing like most AR demo's you see.

The software consists of my own simple 3D engine and a very simple vertex shader to do the transformation of the perspective.

That is pretty damn cool. Makes me wonder why Nintendo didn't think of it for their bloody 3DS. Maybe they did, and it would have made the units too expensive, or the tech couldn't be miniaturized enough. In any case, the thing would be marginally more appealing to me, if the 3D effect didn't require that I hold my head perfectly still within a small cone of space that only stretches to about two feet from the screen.

Damn that is cool, now imagine if this guy got his idea stolen I mean bought out and they started to use it in kinect games? that would be a good reason to buy it.
