As expected, the fan-made Resident Evil 2 remake project has been shut down. But before you grab your virtual pitchforks and torches and head over the Capcom HQ (or its Unity Blog), the end of the project appears to be voluntary.
According to a translated post on the Facebook page for Invader Games, they decided to shut down Resident Evil 2 Reborn after talking with Capcom - shortly before it announced its official remake of the game. Not only that, it appears that Capcom will at some point meet with the team to get its input.
"Today we want to join us of a very special day for Invader Games," the post reads. "After the official announcement of the Resident Evil 2 remake by Capcom, we officialize (SIC) the end of the works on Resident Evil 2 Reborn."
"Contrary to what might be thought, this is wonderful news for us and, as fans, we're so happy that Capcom has decided to take the lead of the project and to develop the remake awaited for years by everybody (nobody could bring back to life the masterpiece of 1998 better than the creators themselves). Meanwhile as developers, we're honored to announce that we've been officially invited to meet Capcom."
The rough Facebook translation of the post goes on to say that Capcom contacted them in advance of its own announcement and asked them to stop the project. The company also invited the homemade remake team to meet up and "discuss further ideas." At the end of the day, the Invader Games team appears to be happy with this outcome, if you believe the post.
"Thank you again for letting us to be where we are now in spite of the long way that remains to be walked through, we hope to focus soon on the biggest professional chance that we could get," Invader games wrote in closing. "Once more, we're very grateful to Capcom for having noticed our work and having appreciated as much the love we feel about the Resident Evil saga as developing video games. It's very rare to find such a leader company in the industry so much open minded and sensitive to the work of a growing studio like ours, guided by passion and competence."
We noted in a report earlier this month that Capcom would likely make a move towards shutting down the fan project after it announced its own in-house Resident Evil 2 remake. That game is being developed by Capcom’s R&D Division 1, but it's obviously still in the conceptual stages at this point. Those who can't stand the wait can get some satisfaction from the Resident Evil 0 HD remake, which is set for release in 2016.
