  • Nintendo pulls Ironfall Invasion from 3DS eShop over exploit

    By james_fudge

Nintendo has pulled a game from the 3DS eShop after it was revealed that it could be used to enable homebrew games and software.

The "Ironhax" exploit showed off by coder Jordan "Smealum" Rabet in a recent video has not been released to the public, but the game is no longer available on the eShop in Europe and North America. The game, Ironfall: Invasion, was a free download, which made it particularly attractive to those who might want to utilize it to enable homebrew software.

"Everyone interested in 3DS homebrew should get Ironfall from the eShop for FREE! Tell all your friends, please RT!" Smealum wrote on Twitter at the start of August.

The Ironhax method was due to launch this week, but before that could happen the game was pulled by Nintendo. Smealum has apologized to Ironfall developer VDev for causing the removal of its game. The game did get a boost from the news of the exploit prior to getting yanked - VDev had revealed it was downloaded "several hundred thousand times" after the exploit was announced.

Eurogamer has more on this story here.

It should be noted that Smealum's intention has always been to enable the loading of Homebrew software and not to in any way enable illegally downloaded or pirated games on the device.
