  • Speedrunner offers $1,000 for information about Mario 64 glitch

    By james_fudge

A speed runner is looking to figure out an odd glitch that has been uncovered in Mario 64 - and he's willing to pay $1,000 to find out the truth behind it. Speed runner pannenkoek20012 has set a cash bounty on a glitch in Mario 64; anyone who can replicate it and share how it works will get $1,000 for sharing the information with him. The glitch, detailed in the video below, involves the game's Tick Tock Clock level. It came to light by accident during a recent Twitch stream by a user named DOTA_Teabag.

While no one knows exactly how the glitch is caused, it seems to be related to jumping just the right way on the seams of two surfaces within the level. This causes Mario to be propelled upwards, in turn skipping a big part of the level.

So why is a speed runner so interested in a glitch? Speed runners are always looking to find new ways to get through levels as quickly as possible and this particular glitch certainly makes going through Tick Tock Clock a lot easier. The glitch might also be exploitable in other parts of the game too.

Those interested in collecting said bounty need to record a play through via the Mupen 64 emulator in an .m64 and .st file, then upload it to a file-sharing site and let pannenkoek20012 know about it.
