  • Hook Up A GameCube Controller To Your 3DS

    By Steven Bogos

A clever Japanese Twitter user couldn't wait for the Wii U version of Smash Bros., and hacked his 3DS to work with a GameCube Controller.

Talk to any Smash Bros. fan and they will all tell you the same thing, the only serious way to play the game is with a GameCube controller. While the upcoming Wii U version will actually have support for the controller, the just-released (in Japan) 3DS version, sadly, does not.

Furthermore, as I discovered for myself, the 3DS's slide pad doesn't quite cut it for a game that requires as precise input as Smash. So, Twitter user Midoriryu decided to take things into his own hands, and hacked his 3DS to support the GameCube controller.

Midoriryu's monstrosity consists of comically large bunch of cables, scotch tape, and some modifications to the back of his 3DS XL, but hey, it works. He even put together a video of his setup in action, which you can check out above. Midoriryu - who going by his Twitter account, appears to be a college student - says the project took him around 26 hours to complete.

This is a super cool proof-of-concept, and no doubt means it shouldn't be too long before unofficial GameCube to 3DS adapters hit the market, right? Or at the very least, Nintendo could take a cue and release its own official adapter...

But for now, we salute you, Midoriru, for wasting your time making stupid, yet awesome, crap like this instead of studying for your college exams.

I definitely need this since Nintendo thought swapping the locations of the ABXY buttons on the 3/DS was a smart decision. I was so used to playing Smash Bros. with a GameCube controller that I caught myself pressing Y+Up (instead of B+Up) to recover from a fall since the Y button is in the B button's spot.
I only bother with things that interest me.

If there is some good detailed images or schematic of this mod I can probably make some easy to solder on board instead of having a shit load of wires.

I still don't like circle pads. Analog sticks all the way!

No more broken 3DS circle pads from intense Super Smash Bros fights thanks to a mod by DekuNukem.

A modder named DekuNukem has posted instructions for how to mess with hardware to create a method for using a GameCube controller with a 3DS for people who are dissatisfied with using the 3DS controls for games like Super Smash Bros.

Those interested will have to be comfortable with the source code DekuNukem provides. The materials needed to make the adapter, other than the 3DS and the GameCube controller, are $9 to $12 at DukeNukem's estimated total cost. The instructions are available here, and DekuNukem notes that more detailed instructions will be available later.

This mod isn't just for playing Super Smash Bros with the GameCube controller. It works for any 3DS game. DekuNukem will accept a limited number of requests from people who aren't comfortable modifying their 3DS.

As Super Smash Bros released in Japan, pictures of broken circle pads, popping off from the 3DS, hit the Internet as it appeared some people's handhelds couldn't take the Smash abuse.

DekuNukem's previous work includes the Poke-O-Matic, an automatic shiny Pokemon finder for Pokemon X and Y.

This isn't the first time someone has found a way to make the GameCube controller work with a 3DS. Japanese Twitter user Midoriryu used scotch tape, cables, and modifications to the back side of a 3DS XL to find a way to play Super Smash Bros with a GameCube controller.
