As with Metroid, there are hidden areas beyond what the original programmers wanted you to see. It's not clear how they came about, though they appear to be either scrapped or reused rooms. You can find more information about it here.
These codes make access much easier.

Destroy Any Wall in the Overworld + Access Hidden Areas VILAPS OXLPIE OXPPYE SZYPTE SZIOAE [B]NOTE: You can break any wall or obstacle with any weapon to gain free access to the so-called "Lost Frontier." If you go too far off the map, things may become glitchy, but there's usually some warning beforehand.[/B]
