I don't know who created the initial code (to play as Ash), but I was playing around with the code to see if I could play as other characters (other than Axel, Blaze, Shiva, Zan, Roo, Ash, & Skate). I used the following code:

Whenever you start a new area, no one will come out. Press Start & you'll get to choose who you want to play as. When you move to the next area, do the same thing again. You'll notice that any lives you lost have been restored. I don't know if continues are restored or not. The only downside to this is that your score resets after each area.
